There seems to be some mistake in the caption of the penultimate picture.

Saw this on the BBC yesterday. There seems to be some mistake in the caption of the penultimate picture. The 96 ran from Putney to Redbridge, but was withdrawn after the 1958 bus strike, can't comment on the plastic box behind it, it's not a 'Boris box' that's all I know

They've corrected the caption since yesterday. I dare say they were inundated by people complaining about the error. (You can guess that it's been changed because it still refers to the new bus as "its" incarnation.)

When I next get near my "RT allocations" book (am away at the moment), I'll check sorry for being lazy. Can't have been two many RT's left in service by 1953. (Remember them well being driven out of Chiswick as trainers - didn't quite clear the class, though...

Even the rooftop versions were being built as late as 1950 according to Ian's Bus Stop "G" had some in 1953 including RT1192, 1196, 1199 - probably more - I stopped looking after three www.countrybus.org/RT/RTa11.htm#fleet

RTs survived in passenger service until 7 April 1979... running out of Barking Garage.
I can remember catching them (the 87) en route to my Primary School (with parent in tow) and I loved them...
I was devastated when they disappeared and I was left with Routemasters...

John Tuthill -yes, a senior moment (and a typo, too); I did indeed mean pre-war RTs. Like everyone else of a certain age, the post-war ones were "the" London bus for a long time (and much smoother to travel on than the very last of the STLs with their jerky gearboxes which lingered on into my early childhood). The Q1 trolleybuses were better than either of course...

norbitonflyer - I think you are right: careful examination of the picture fails to reveal a route number box on the rear dome, so it would be a post-war bus.

Apart from RTL501, from what I've read, where the RTLs were the first to go LT fitted older bodies onto RTL chassis' as a means of removing them from the fleet list. The LAST RT route was the 62. I was standing in the crowd on that sad Saturday 7th April 1979as we watched RT 624 drive into BK

Forest Gate(G) closed in April 1960 Roofbox RTLs did not start appearing, apart from RTL501, until 1964, and the bodies were classified as RT10. As I wrote before, as the RTLs were the first to go, the policy was to fit older bodies on to RTL chassis.

You still can see any running number, but where the BBC have morphed(?) a plastic box onto the photo, the original shows a roofbox RT on route 9(Here we go again!
