Saw a notice at Neasden this morning - sarah siddons is going to be making an excursion on the Met - 10 may i think , should have paid more attention to the date.
Going to be going from neasden depot , up to amersham and back to neasden via watford

Now you lot of spotters - keep your eyes peeled between Tuesday 8th May & Friday 11th May and anyday between Monday 14th May & Friday 8th June.

Sarah, the 4TC set and 20227 (my lordzzzz!) are operating for sstock familiarisation purposes. leaving Ruislip Depot at approx 1022, it is booked to run to Neasden where it reverses to go to Amersham, back to Watford, where it runs back to Amersham. It then runs back to Ricky to have its lunch (half hour) in the south sidings (picturesque!). It then goes back to Amersham after lunch. Then it goes back to Harrow to reverse to go to Uxbridge, back to Neasden, then back to Ruislip to stable at 1638.

Go get some shots and post them here!

Reminds of the Class 15 BTH locos that had tripcocks fitted to run over the Northern on goods trains and also the Central.

It was supposed to run with people on board on 20th May, however i beleive this has been put back slightly as these runs that i have posted about are for familiarisation purposes.

Who can say? If a timetable notice has been published to cover more than one day, its anyones guess. I shall see if i can find out

Read up about JOHN HAMPDEN, he of L 5 fame, as it is very interesting. Mrs Sarah Siddons has quite a history if you look into it. Mind you, there's a lot of JOHN in SARAH now I gather, or has been since the Brake Block Test team needed to acquire parts in the late Seventies!

Met Loco Names.

At least, with the later Electric Locos, the Met named them from well known public characters rather than their own staff - 'Charles Jones', etc. or even 'E C Trench' or- (wait for howls!) - Sir Nigel Gresley!!

In 100 years time, if you're still alive (I won't be*) and if ms Jolie is, both of you will no doubt look a bit worse for wear and I doubt too many people will gasp in awe at your achievement ;D

Seriously though, the amount of telephone calls I've taken recently from now out of the closet enthusiasts about these runs. The numerous times I have faxed the (now obviously fictional) timetable notice to certain staff.

Yes, it was one of the ESLs, sadly, I didn't take a separate photo of it. However, here's a shot of an ESL in action, though I have no idea of its identity - how many of these machines were there and how did they work?



Ex-T Stock units ESL118A & ESL118B were also on display at Neasden during the end of steam on the Underground ceremonials, looking newly repainted:-

The two T stock cars are now preserved at the Spa valley railway minus their traction gear (motors) ect.

Thans M-C! Geoff, I never ever saw the Picc one move...but I have a photo of ESL 106 at Golders Green just before the left tunnel mouth facing south, that was published in UNDERGROUND issue 7.

There were originally 18 of them. They had de-icing tanks inside which dribbled fluid onto the top of the current rails. The location of the rail was detected by a link attached to the pick-up shoe so that the fluid would only flow if the current rail was below the loco. They also had serrated rollers and brushes.

They were freezing cold to work on and were not good to run over detonators (don't ask). They had hand operated window wipers. They had the original Westinghouse brake, GE66 motors, control equipment and bogies of the 1903 motor cars that they were converted from (in 1938-9) until the early 1960s when they had the master controllers replaced by ones ex F Stock and e.p. contactors ex T Stock.

They only had one brake cylinder so, if this went AWOL, you were stuffed. A motorman named Johnny Sobers from Northfields had this happen to him as he ran down the bank into Hammersmith EB Picc early one frosty morning. He managed to stop at Barons Court with the guard winding on the handbrake. Johnny was related to the famous cricketer Garfield Sobers.
