That why they should adopt the German system and have the announcements start just after you have left a station. This gives time for all the relevant info to be relayed to the passenger. [they could also add which side the doors will open too.] Oh, just like some of the tubelines do. Trouble is, you can't hear everything as there is too much noise!

How far in advance do you know which platform at Earl's Court you are going into?
Moderator question: since when has Earl's court been on the Jubbly?
(unfortunately I can't move individual posts)

(unfortunately I can't move individual posts)Sorry, that was a baddly-phrased question. What I meant was in relation to the advertising in advance which side the doors will open on, how far in advance of the station do you know which platform the train will be arriving at? Obviously at places like West Hampstead there is only one platform you can arrive at, however what about stations such as Stratford Jubbly or Earl's Court on the District? Chris

Ahhhh... That's still not announced at all is it? That's half the fun of alighting at Earl's Court, or Edgware Rd, or Arnos Grove, or even (Chris) gambling on which side to stand as the HST gets to Paddington. An insoluble question? ?

There was a Scottish site linked from somewhere on this forum recently (I can't remember where though, Colin...) that gave the headcodes and (scheduled) platforms for mainline services. Combine that with the map of Paddington available on NR's site and you don't need to gamble!

True!
Particularly at Temple Meads I tend to lean out of the window (but not too far, got clonked on the head by a tree on the Tyne Valley Line once!) to try and guess as early as I can!

That's the funniest thing I've read on here for quite a while Plus, I don't think shouty man should be gotten rid of, it's timeless. And unlike some of the CSA's or Sonia's announcements, you can understand and hear him all the time!

I haven't seen anything to suggest dear old Mr Shouty is being retired. Far from it I would imagine, given the focus of attention recently at the "Platform/Train Interface" (their buzz words, not mine you understand ;D )

Telling you what platform you arrive on would be good at Camden Town, as I nearly always get lost trying to get out of the station(especially when the escalators are off and there's only the stairs)

They used to be, but I like them now - sounds more natural
''This is a Circle Line Train via Kings Cross''

The 95 stock has had a new voice for about the last year, but not all trains have changed. I prefer the older pa, it tells you rather than instructs you. I dont know if its me but the new one seems to be a lot louder. Sometimes you wish the voice [both] could be switched off, but it is great for vips and tourists and infrequent travellers.

Both dot matrix displays (as on the Picc) and automated announcements are used, unless they've changed things since I went on there last. I can hear it in my head now: "This station is Canning Town. Change here for Docklands Light Railway, including services to the ExCel Exhibition Centre, National Rail Services, and City Airport Bus Link" I'm starting to scare myself....... I was on the jubly today, and about 6 months after the London City Airport branch of the DLR opened it was still advertising the bus link (does it still even run?). Also, it got its knickers in a twist and gave us no announcements after this until the approach to Southwark - when we were treated to all the announcements we'd missed in a row, finally getting the "this station is Southwark..." message just as the doors closed!

The Jub also has had its '' Next Station'' announcements changed, to play for most stations just as you're approaching the platform, as opposed to about half way between stations, as it used to. It's also got a lot less harsh sounding, and now it just sounds like it's telling you, rather than shouting it at you

The announements and saloon displays can be turned off, via the controls in the cab [not saying exactly how, but it can be done]

Why not? Because some annoyed passenger might smash down the J door and switch the announcements off? ;D

There was a site linked somewhere on the forum a while ago which had them for most lines. I can't remember where it was though and a quick search hasn't turned up anything. Perhaps someone else knows/can have a look.

That wasn't the one I remember, but it does have far more variety, so thanks for the link all the same.
