A long time ago in a different place, Harsig once explained that Watford South Junction (IMR 'JJ') was in danger of falling apart because the insulation on the wiring was rapidly disintegrating, thus preventing the integrity of the failsafe mechanisms from being guaranteed. ISTR that the service through the triangle was crucified, and that only one train was permitted in section between the junction homes and the JP outer homes, with all points scotched and clipped.
Are there any other IMRs that have come dangerously close to going up in smoke because the wiring is going to pieces? And if so, have train movements had to be constrained like above?

most of the IMR's on ssl where wired around the same time with the type of cable concerned west ken east (in lillie bridge depot) is the last on the district to have this wire still in use but as we speak it is being re-wired.
since that incident at watford south every IMR had to be inspected for wire degradation some sites were worse then others

What type of cable is it, and did the engineers ever figure out why this wire's insulation went to pieces?

the inner insulation is made up of rubber and over the years this has cracked thus exposing the inner conductor dont know the actual name of it i do have photos but i dont think its the best thing to publish this across the net

there was a incident a few years back now i think it was either mile end or bethnal green where the rats/mice were eating the insulation of the cables

It found a piece of metallic cigarette packet paper which it used in it's nest. This nest was on top of a couple of relays.  |

What insulating material does LUL use nowadays; is it PVC like that in modern house wiring?

What insulating material does LUL use nowadays; is it PVC like that in modern house wiring? Oh no. PVC is bad, it has all sorts of nasties in it which get released during a fire. All LU wiring needs to be LSOH (Low Smoke 0 Halogen). |

Halogens are gases - often used in extra bright torch lamps for example. (And also fibre optic shunt signals)
Unfortunately they can be released when cable insulation burns and they aren't the nicest of gases you'll ever come across.
LS0H cable is simply a sort that in a fire doesn't release any Halogen.

sounds like "plenum" cable, which is used for running network cable through air ducts
