So there seems to be an interesting reversing arrangement taking place this weekend: westbound trains are non-stopping at Caledonian Road and reversing at Highbury. Eastbound trains are using the oposite platform at Caledonian Road.
Does this mean trains are reversing using the ELL platforms at Highbury and if they are changing rails, are they changing from overhead lines somewhere after camden to 3rd rail? (in order to use the ELL lines) That would be a lot of switch-around for a short distance.
Ta!

What they are doing is using a facing connection to access the westbound road (but NOT the crossover just east of the platforms at Camden Road), arriving at platform 2 instead of platform 3 at Caledonian Road. They then run straight in to platform 7 at Highbury & Islington (usually westbound NLL). On the return journey, they cross over to the southernmost westbound track and pass through Caledonian Road through what used to be platform 1.
The westbound line is bidirectional so does not need hand signalling or any other special measures.
Platform 2 at Highbury (normally used for ELL) is also bidirectional, but the OHLE ends just before the platform (western end) and the third rail doesn't begin until at least 20/30 yards or so in to the platform so there is a non-electrified gap.
EDIT: Have re-worded this slightly to clarify the situation at Camden Road.

I don't understand why EB trains are accessing the westbound track with the crossover just east of Camden Road. The track map shows that if trains remain on the EB, and just go straight, they should be able to access platform 2 at C Rd & B, which is the normal westbound platform.

Sorry I should have made it a bit clearer, I didn't mean the crossover just beyond the platforms, I meant the junction further on (Camden East Junction?). I call it a facing connection as the trains will go across to what is normally the 'wrong' line. That track map is also wrong. The westbound lines from platforms 2 and 7 at Highbury merge west of the station and then splits in to two lines again just east of Caledonian Road & Barnsbury, one of which passes through what used to be platform 1, I know that because I did Camden Road to Highbury in both directions today! ;D

The layout on SimSig is the pre-ELL layout and still has North Woolwich and of course Stratford Low Level so the layout is substantially different now compared to the early 2000s! In fact had a play on it earlier, but I'm on Kings Cross now, someone is hosting a session and I'm on as a client.

While I know it's terribly out of date, I now have a feel for the service patterns and frequency (such as the trains terminating at Stratford LL, some of the mainline trains running from Stratford etc) from that era!

PS: to keep this thread semi-on topic - at the moment the Richmond-Stratford line is calling at a total of 6 (or 5, depending on direction) stations! Suspended between Hampstead Heath + Richmond with severe delays on the rest of the line, but suspended east of H+I, and not calling at CR+B in one direction! Brilliant!

It shows that currently at Camden West Jn both EB & WB trains share a small part of track. It shows that the EB track from Camden Road suddenly becomes the WB and the same in the other direction. Now by that reckoning EB & WB trains can't pass each other at this junction and it's either going to take keeping trains behind red signals for a little while or incredible timetabling for a service to work here, not to mention the fact that no-one in their right mind would layout a junction like this where it is not needed. It's actually layed out with the WB track splitting at Camden West Jn onto the old WB & the EB. The EB also splits into 2 just east of here to form the current EB tracks and the through tracks (which would pass Platform 4 if there was one).

The guy who made the map - Carto, is on the forum. I'll let him know of this, which he'll probably rectify in time for the next map.

I didn't receive any mail but hopefully someone else has informed me about that mistake (and this thread). I'll correct that in the next version (it should come out soon )
