I often wonder why the 1938ts were marshalled differently on different lines.
For instance on the Northern line the 4 car unit in 7 car trains was at the NORTH end. Whilst on the Bakerloo it was at the SOUTH end. Similarly on the Piccadilly the 4 car was at the WEST end.
I wonder why the Bakerloo was out of step?

Well, up until some time in the 60s, seven-car sets were uncoupled into 3+4 in the off peaks, with the 3 going to depot and the 4 remaining in service. So the 3 had to be at the end nearest to the depot (or other storage) when uncoupling took place.
The Bakerloo uncoupled at Watford, with the 3-car set going to Queens Park. So the 3-cars had to be at south end. Presumably similar reasons for Picc and Northern, although I don't know about their uncoupling.

Now there is an anomaly here as I was told when I worked at the Elephant that uncuopling alsoo took place at the Elephant and Queens Park.
Edit:
If uncoupling WAS done at Elephant and QP it must have been damned awkward as the UNDM was at the south end of the unit that was uncoupled.

You have far more useless knowledge than I.
I know about the Watford uncoupling because it had an effect on stock allocation. The Bakerloo drivers refused to drive UNDMs between Queens Park and Watford (which seems pretty reasonable), so the UNDMs planned for the Bakerloo had to go to the Picc.
On the Northern, there must have been a mix of 4+3 and 3+4 formations: once around the Kennington loop and the train is reversed.....

Sydneynick is right: the 38ts on the Picc always ran 'wrong way round' until routine uncoupling was abandoned, when they were turned back PDQ.

And when they were "wrong way round", they had to be turned before going to Acton for overhaul, presumably so that they would be the same way round as other 38TS in Acton. They were reversed using the Earls Court - High St - South Ken triangle, doubtless getting friendly waves from District drivers who thought that, for once, a Picc driver had accepted a wrong signal. ;D

Was the Bakerloo uncoupling actually done at Watford Or Bushey? I seem to vaguely recall amention that the 3 cars with undm were driven to Croxley Green depot with the undm leading

Maybe this old un's memory is going, but I'm sure when I was a greenhorn in the 60's,the UNDM's were all on the Picc or Northern there were none on the Bakerloo. It was 30xxx UNDM's on one line and 31xxx UNDM's on the other(don't ask me which number was on which line)Incidentally, the 72Mk2TS now on the Bakerloo still runs WWR do any of you know what the original reason for this was?I do.

The Bakerloo and Northern also ran 6 cars for 7cars in the peaks when short of good 4 car units.I don't know if the Northern ran 2 49TS UNDM units coupled up,although I suppose in theory it was possible.
