I was on a train on the pic today approaching cockfosters when I noticed two 1983 stocks in the sidings that looked decidedly worse for wear.
Do any 83's still exist within LU that are in operational condition?

I see. After seeing the two 83's in such a poor state, I was curious if any are still operational and are capable of running over the network such as the 72 thats kept at aldwych.

I get the impression that the 83's were one of the worst stocks ever to be built. Were they really that bad?

No... most who say that never seemed to have gone on any, and see them as mini D stocks. I know a few of the drivers who use to drive them said they were a good drive, very fast. Only the single leaf doors were their doom really, and the JLE.
EDIT: Lots of spelling errors!

Didn't they have rather dodgy air suspension too?

The metacone air suspension was fitted to C stock, but was removed at refurbishment, due to a number of problems with it, not least that it gave an 'interesting' ride The theory of the metacone was that it was self-levelling, and would adjust the amount of air in the metacone according to the weight of the car as the doors closed, thus ensuring the height of the car would remain the same. The problem was, it was like having a balloon for the suspension - every little bump in the track seemed to be magnified 5 times over
