During the refurbishment of Turnham Green station, I've noted that the far end of the platforms, towards Stamford Brook, have had large squares cut out of the platform fabric, with plastic things inserted into the holes.
What are they there for?
Also, why does the WB island lack OPO monitors, relying instead on a pair of mirrors?

Don't know about that - haven't seen them, and won't see them for a while as I am on leave ;D ;D ;D The original requirement for OPO equipment specified that where the entrance/exit to/from a platform was at or near the rear of the train, monitors MUST be provided. However, in the real world, mirrors are better, since they never go out of focus, don't suffer from power failures, are always in colour, offer good contrast, don't suffer from focussing problems (except if the driver takes his/her glasses off ) For these reasons, there is no need to use monitors where the platform is straight or nearly straight, provided the entrance/exit is near the front of the train, and the platform can be seen in full using the mirror. There were a number of exceptions to these rules, which I'll try to write down at a later date, if anyone is interested. However, recent changes to the standards now allow a mirror only to be used even if the entrance/exit is at the rear of the train

Thanks. I'd always wondered why mirrorsa were used in some places and not others.
As for the holes in the platform, they are, quite literally, holes - during the platform closures you could literally watch Metronet employees using pneumatic jackhammers to punch straight through the platform surface!

What are they there for? They are probably new bases for the 'improved' lighting that has been 'promised' in the refurb, so I would expect to see some new columns sprouting up soon.

so I would expect to see some new columns sprouting up soon. New lighting columns have indeed started to appear on both platforms, too a much closer spacing that the earlier version.
