Quite a random question here, but a while ago I came across a file that had the platform lengths for NR stations on it. As I seem to remember it was a (very!) large pdf. I can't remember if I downloaded a copy of it; most probably in my ignorance I didnt, but I'm wondering if LUL have something similar for stations served by the tube?
Specifically I'm interested in the Northern, but tbh all the lines interest me. I'm interested in it because I've read in several books about 'limited platform lengths' at some stations that prevent longer trains being run. What are these platforms, and what do they limit the trains to?
Btw, if I ever come across that .pdf file of the NR stations again I'll post it up in the forum. Thinking about it, it may have been an appendix to something.
Cheers though!

As far as I'm aware most underground Northern Line stations are approx 350ft platforms. Highgate has considerably longer platforms. One set of doors remain closed due to slightly shorter platforms at Charing X, and Clapham Common amongst others.
The Piccadilly and Bakerloo also have approx 350ft long platforms. The Victoria, Central, and Jubilee Lines have approx 400ft long platforms.

"Limited Platform Lengths"
All platforms are 'limited' (ie. End to End). Longer trains than are used at present would require Platforms to be lengthened (a costly job in tunnels ). though as can be seen, present trains can be 'squeezed onto most Platforms.

Granted each line has platforms which are 50' per car long, meaning that the central and vic are roughly 400' long etc, but I'm wondering about the exact length, such as possibly 412' on the central, or 347' on the northern. Surely this information must be publically available if it is for NR?
Actualy, that brings another question to my mind about platform lengths...could the southern half of the circle take 8*50' trains if the train used selective close on the front and rear carriages with an appropriate stopping point?

Information about platform lengths on Network Rail is avaliable in Sectional Appendixes. Unfortunately, these are private documents, but you can often get out of date ones off of eBay. These would still tell you the correct platform lengths!
Alternatively, you can buy a Quail map book, which tells you how long a platform is in carriages (1 carriage = approx 20ft.)

Sorry to bump here. Sam, out of interest what is the book youve got from quail, since I just orderd a book from them covering the area, but it doesnt contain the platform details. I think maybe I got the wrong end of the stick
