No contest, surely! Who wants a train you can't stand up straight in? I can stand up straight on tube stock trains  I do agree the sub-surface stock is less claustrophobic (sp?) though. I don't get the opportunity to travel much on LU living in Somerset, but the Metropolitan Line trains are the nicest (A stock), followed by the District line D stock (I've not been in a refurbished one though). I can stand up straight on tube stock trains Well, so can I if I don't stand too near to the doors, but I've experienced squeezing on a packed tube train, being unable to move away from the doors and having to spend the journey with my head at 45 degrees to the rest of me!  |

Around 45 years ago, I got to school by catching the train from Finchley Central to Highgate. In those days, at the southern end of Finchley Central the Barnet trains went through the curved section of a double slip. Watching them come crashing through, sleepers pumping up and down at the rail joints, I developed considerable respect for the ability of 38 stock to stay on the rails. When I last samples the delights  of LU in 2002, the whole system seemed much more tatty and most of trains were uncomfortable. But at least LU has not gone the way of the Paris Metro and installed unpadded fibreglass seats. |

I happen to prefer the Picc Line units. Something about riding one of those low riding trains that gives a different perspective on railfanning. The Vicky and Bakerloo Line trains are cool too.
The Sub-Surface Stock is ok, but I can't understand why they don't have HVAC installed. It's not like there wasn't any room for it.

If so, bear in mind that the sub-surface stocks were designed in the 1950s - 1970s. In the UK, air conditioning was pretty much unheard of then, and few if any mainline trains had it. Hopefully, the new sub-surface stock in 5 years time will have it. |
