Hanger lane Juction to Ealing Broadway W/B (pic taken from A406 me thinks). Off top of head the signal with his plate blanked off is WP170

+2. WP170/RWP17, a bit of signalling that always made the tester sound like he was an inquisitive child while testing!
(Bonus to anyone who can work out why; I suspect the two learned gentlemen ahead of me might!)

Following on from the previous post, there must be a terrible joke about not worrying the sheep.

+2. WP170/RWP17, a bit of signalling that always made the tester sound like he was an inquisitive child while testing! (Bonus to anyone who can work out why; I suspect the two learned gentlemen ahead of me might!) I had a miniscule involvement in the installation of WP170 and the signal installed on the other road at the same time as I was asked to provide indication path details for the two SPTs at Earls Ct. This being not long after I had relocated all the SPT desk panels in the control room. As for the testing I suspect you are referring to the phonetic alphabet, Whiskey Papa. Interestingly (or not depending upon one's bent) in older phonetic alphabets it could equally have been Willie Pudding (the mind boggles at what would be made of that today), William Peter, William Pip or William Prep. Certainly when I began my LT career the international phonetic alphabet used for testing nowadays was not used universally then, I suspect because many of the people I worked with were ex-forces who were more used to Apple, Bertie, Charlie, Donald, Edward, Freddie, George, Harry, Ink, Johnny, King, Love, Mike/Monkey, Nuts, Peter, Queenie, Robert, Sugar, Tommy, Uncle, Victor, X-Ray, Yoke, Zebra. A similar alphabet was once commonly used by telephone operators and published in issued GPO telephone directories as an aid to pronunciation in the earlier days of telephony when audio was not as clear as it is these days. Back in the day testing out on a Central line Woodord resignalling changeover circa 1977 I recall the call signs of the PYE radios we used, Yoke and Zebra, as a newbie I had the 'Yoke' set on my back for the outside tester I accompanied to use. How things have changed with modern handhelds and mobile phones!

Close, but no cigar! To get WP17 to clear you need to drop Y.YY TPR, which led to a few testers shouting "Why Why Why"!

Funny, I used to fully test out EBY regularly including clearing WP17 by pulling an incoming fuse but I was simply on a different wavelength. Having said that I would not have remembered that it was Y.YY TPR eight or so years on and Papa seemed appropriate although I really didn't see how Whiskey was!
