Morning all, I was at Green Park on the Vic' yesterday and I came across this light, labelled something to the effect of PESPII. It was above head height pretty much level with the station name boards though I've never seen then before. Any ideas anyone? Passenger Emergency something or other?

There will several along each platform.
They allow people on the platform to stop a train and have been a feature of the Victoria line since it opened.
This looks like an extra feature to help the train operator/station staff see which one has been operated.

I'll have a look when I'm next on the line to see if I can see the devices that activate them then. Having travelled on the Vic perhaps more than any other line, I can't say I've ever noticed them...

They are indicator lights above the plungers to assist staff in locating which one has been activated.

They are Passemger Emergency Stop Plungers, as stated above. They were present on platforms before the upgrade, a flat version with a black board and yellow dot. They were completely replaced with the signalling upgrade, to a red 'left' cap style... Thing with a button.

I had another look at this today and as Rich32 and Memorex suggested there were emergency buttons underneath. Having used the line for quite a few years and never seen them I can see why: they do get rather lost among the adverts and the roundels. Rich - do they get used much (I'd never have thought to use one in an emergency) or do they often get activated by accident? {edit} I have posted photos but my webserver is playing up at the moment, hopefully they'll reappear below}

No, they don't get activated that often and when they do, it's normally for a genuine reason.

The new ones have a red dust cover on them, hinged onto a rubber gasket, flipped up to reveal the emergency button itself, also used on the Central line too. The red dust cover is even more important on the open-air Central line, to keep rain off the buttons in the open sections.

Can someone give us an example of when such a button would be used? If a train was approaching and someone was standing on the track trying to retrieve something (a shoe perhaps)?

The signage always makes me laugh. "Push to stop train" and "Penalty for improper use".
Is the bloke that didn't want to miss that train's use of the button proper or improper? He did after all "Push to stop train".

You are correct, it doesn't cut traction current off. Any train within the area of the plunger operation with stop, the driver can then switch to RM to move the train if required.
