Before the introduction of the existing colour-light signalling at both of these sites, how did the Guards (and later, the T/Ops) send a TRTS notice to the signalbox?

In semaphore days, the signalman pulled off for the next train out as soon as he could. It was up to the guard to ensure that the train didn't go until it was supposed to.
