I was boarding a west bound District line train at Barking Station at about 12:45 today, when an Overground train from Gospel Oak disgorged a few passengers onto platform 7.
Does any one know why, is it the new norm?

Platform 7 and 8 are often used for GOBLIN services - Saturday afternoon services frequently use platform 7 (for drivers' route retention). As I don't go that way every week, I can't say whether it's always the case. It's also how they reverse and get access to East Ham Depot.

Many thanks JS, that's also probably why I've seen them on the "flyover" on the odd occassion.

I got nearly caught out by this a couple of months ago. To be fair the staff on P1 were on the ball and kept redirecting people who went there on "auto pilot". It's quite an involved move to get a very full 172 detrained, down to the siding and back up again and then loaded up and off. When I saw this the 172 was late and that then held up a C2C train working down to Grays. The numbers using the GOBLIN were pretty amazing for a 2 car train but I guess I should not be surprised.

Siding? You're not thinking of the so-called "up connecting line" are you? Sadly not labelled, but visible in this photograph of the London Workstation at Upminster IECC, adjacent to "Down Con".

How will they sort this under electrification, and before Riverside comes about? Agree re the 172s. They have revolutionised the Goblin's comfort, except they are far too short to accommodate all who want to travel. A good deal of elbow work is needed to exit, say, at Leytonstone Mid!

Probably. I don't know the layout at Barking. All I saw, and it was dark, was the 172 head east and then come back again into Platform 8. I had no idea there was a connecting line - I just assumed it was a turnback / siding given the train reversed in it.
