What is different about the closing mechanism of doors on S stock when compared to other stock? They make a loud slamming noise when they close. I'm aware that they are electrically operated, but so are the doors on 2009 stock; they don't make the same sound.
Also, is it my imagination, or was the closing sound even louder when the stock was new? They seemed to get quieter after a couple of years in service.

Yes they were very loud on the S8, but became a lot quieter as they are today not too long after introduction. I think no S7s had the doors close that loud.

Each pair of doors has a motor driving a very course screw thread which opens or closes the doors (thread is one hand for the left hand door and the other hand for the right hand door). If there is no power on the motor the doors can be pushed open or closed by hand. When they are closed, there is a separate lock that holds the doors locked when the motor isn't powered. It is this lock that makes the noise. The software controlling the lock was changed after complains that the operation of the lock was too noisy.

The thing I don't understand is why the chime when the doors are opening?

So those with visual impairment know the doors have opened.

The thing I don't understand is why the chime when the doors are opening? If the train is operating in passenger open mode, it helps visually impaired people to know that the train has berthed in the platform and that the doors can be opened.

the doors make enough noise without the chimes, and the sound of the doors opening is more location specific than a chime which comes from one corner, and could be either to the left or right of the doors .
I don't think the chimes sound in passenger open mode unless someone opens the doors but I will check.
