Today is the 50th anniversary of the final timetabled Steam hauled service on British Railways so I'm guessing the location bears some link to this?

The BBC clearly simplified the significance of today greatly to make news worthy.

This has nothing to do with the end of steam on BR. In fact it’s a lot brighter and happier event than that😊

Well, that narrows it down to 1/365th of the population, probably.

Well, that narrows it down to 1/365th of the population, probably. I will accept: a)Someone associated with the forum b)Someone linked with railways or at a pinch transport in general. I will NOT accept any 'Z' list or even worse 'ZZ'list so called celebrity.

Is it the birthday of our esteemed (and much missed) founder? A lovely idea, but it's not Dave's birthday.

I have just realised that I wished our wonderful quiz-setter a happy birthday on a social media platform on 2nd August! So on here I wish Chris a belated happy birthday.

Whilst it is slightly off topic, I seem to recall that the incidence of birthdays is not uniformly spread through the year. There was a party trick [the statistical mechanism escapes me] where in a room of a thousand people, on quizzing, one in every nineteen would have the same birthday. Google suggests that [in the USA] 17 Dec is the most popular day for conception to occur!

in a room of a thousand people, on quizzing, one in every nineteen would have the same birthday. Not sure how that could work, unless there were only nineteen different birthdays amongst the entire cohort. However, statistically slightly more than 19 members in a group of 1,000 will have a birthday this week (since 19x52=988) You may be thinking of the statistical phenenon that in a group of more than 23 people the odds are better than even that two of them will share a birthday.

Thanks Norbitonflyer - It was the group of 23 that I had heard of though I'm still not sure how it works exactly.

Mathematically, it's easier to understand if you first work out the probability of everyone in the group having a unique birthday.
The first person can have any day as a birthday, so the chance is 1. The second person has to avoid that day, so there's a chance of 364/365 of still being unique. (Let's ignore leap years and keep this simple!) The third person has two days to avoid, so the chance of remaining unique is 363/365.
And so on. By the time you multiply all these probabilitites together: 1 x 364/365 x 363/365 ... and so on for 23 terms all the way to 343/365, you get an answer close to 1/2 for the chance of all the birthdays being unique. The chance of everyone having a unique birthday is the opposite of the chance of at least two people sharing a birthday, so that's close to 1/2 also.
