On Saturday 23rd October wife and I went into central London to pick up some pre-ordered goods. We needed to get from Tottenham Court Road to Bond St, so took the Central Line. We tried to use the lifts to the platform as my wife suffers a back problem. But the last lift (can't recall the identifying letter, was it B?) down to the platform was inaccessible behind a locked fire door, a complete barrier to wheelchair users. Hadn't seen any warning.
Weirdly the westbound train was announcing the stations correctly, but kept describing itself as an eastbound to Hainault via Woodford. How can this happen? Suggests a serious defect in the system, and lack of care by the operator.

Most likely the TOp forgot to change the destination when they changed ends and hadn't noticed.
Alternatively there are a few trains where if you don't change the destination in both cabs you'll be stuck with the destination in the rear cab.
Another possibility is a fault with the Data Transmission System (DTS), our version of "Eddie the Shipboard Computer" just not so chatty. As well as fault alerts it is controls destinations, "Sonia", countdown clock and door chimes.
Unsurprisingly when DTS has a fault it doesn't give a fault warning so you have to recognise the symptoms.

Old joke. It's called Sonia cos it gets-on-ya nerves. After nearly 20 years in the cab I only notice Sonia when its not working

Is this the same software that's driving the train? "Nothing can possibly go wrong...go wrong...go wrong..." No. From memory the ATO data gives inputs to the auto announcer (announcement trigger points etc), but it is a totally different piece of software. |

maybe not quite an odd experience but a few minutes ago there was a noise and rumbling below my house which suggests that an engineering train went by - Gants Hill area, about 8.15pm, Friday.

It was going somewhat slowly - so obviously it was pacing its journey so that it does not catch up the passenger train and then need to come to a halt. I am surprised that a '62ts would make so much noise, maybe though the extra equipment for the sandite (etc) makes it much heavier. I wonder why that RAT was coming to the east? Has it finished its tour of duty so is going to find a quiet hidey-hole somewhere for a long sleep until autumn 2022? re: the possibility of a flat wheel, I think not - there was none of the type of rhythmic thud noise caused by wheels with flat spots. However ......... I did recently hear one of those too - a different train, travelling faster; thud - thud - etc - I think it was yesterday morning. |

Both RATs have been working separately (5-car West, 8-car East) since 5 October. Unfortunately this week due to a problem with the 8-car train, the 5-car has been sent to the East as cover until the season is due to finish on 23 December. They will then return to Acton Works for a well earned overhaul. |

Thanks again, well in that case I'd better get my camcorder out. I know some excellent vantage points in the Newbury Park area. It will work well with a planned shopping trip to Sainsburys - who are in the former railway goods yard.

Even on the Victoria line, I remember it was going Walthamstow but was announcing it was going to Brixton. It even made one person who boarded scramble for the doors to get off. |

I remember how quiet the 92 stock was when introduced compared to the 62. The inside of the 62 was noisier and outside. When they went over various subways and bridges on the eastern section there was a lot more noise and vibration with the 62 stock. |
