Does anyone know why the passenger emergency alarm handles on the Northern Line are in the process of been modified?
I know that this has already happened on the Jubilee Line.
On their website, Pickersgill-Kaye (http://www.pkaye.co.uk/peahlul.htm) say that "an optional panel to prevent inadvertent or accidental handle operation can now be supplied." Is that what this modification is?
I noticed a subtle difference in the carriage of the train I was traveling in this morning!

Sorry, been meaning to reply for ages to your post James!
Yes, they are smaller in the sense, they are what?......half their previous length? They do seem less vulnerable to being pulled by accident, I have had to reset them a few times [old ones] because apparently people leant too much on them.
This seems to be [as you suggest] the only reasonable reason for their redesign.

the reason for the 'redesign' is because the old one could be leant against [and thus activated very easily]; because the bottom part could be pushed in easily, this has been modded so that it requires a bit more force exerted to activate it...
