How are Metronet Rail: a) taking so long to replace the thing b) able to make such a pig's ear of it?

Heard a suggestion that it may be dealt with in April 2009, but I'm not going to hold my breath.

I wouldn't hold it either.
The current plan is to plain line 7A points (on the SB road) in April and recommission the crossover around the August Bank Holiday.
However, I doubt even the first date will be achieved at the moment.

What is the problem with it currently that requires this interim solution of plain lining it? If a component is life expired, isn't it easier to replace it either like-for-like or with a direct equivalent (I'm sure the answer to this will be 'no', but can someone please explain why?).

Plain lining is almost the standard response to a 'Camden Town' style switch such as this. Also, the track alterations needed to reinstate the crossover are fairly involved and plain lining makes the process easier.

Oh no... that bit gets worse. BOTH ends will be clamplock afterwards - the track design won't accomodate anything else!!

So as I understand things the crossover is going to be completely removed?
If that is the case that would mean no train turning facility between Waterloo and Paddington, surely this is not a good idea.

It will be removed for a few months. As it has been out of commission for over a year now I don't think it will cause any more problems than it does today.

There's no reversing facility at Waterloo, trains merely tip out there to run empty into London Road without having to reverse. All the pointwork is at Lambeth.

I have no idea. I think the plan was to have it fixed a bit quicker than this.
