What has happened at Kings Cross on the escalators between the Piccadilly/Victoria and Met/Circle. level? The ceilings look like they have been in the middle of a refurbishment for ages.Whenever I am there nothing seems to have moved-bare concrete, bent bits of metal, wires, mesh.A total mess and a great intro to London Kings Cross for tourists. I thought all the work had finished now after the fire.

I am sure this is all tied up with the upgrade of the whole Underground station, with the Met side and the new Western ticket hall being substantially completed in 2006/07.
Certainly the "Picc Line" escalator shaft (escalators 4/5/6) has been like that for many months, if not longer.
Work has recently started on the platforms. The Picc and Nthn, which have looked so shabby for so long, are at last having their 'KX' design tiles removed.
The Vic Line platforms had their 'grey' tiles removed also many months ago but at last work on cementing the walls has begun.
I would assume (suggestion - not a fact!) that this is all geared up to coinciding with the new Northern ticket hall, due to open early next year. Again, I am assuming that "it will all come together" around that time, although I suppose you should never assume ;D

When the new Northern line ticket hall opens Kings Cross will get another 10 Otis HD-B escalators.

Replacements for existing, or actual new ones? (Wondering where new ones would fit )

The new ticket hall (which will ultimately be underneath the new national rail concourse) is being connected to the platforms by completely new passages, which will also have lifts connected to them.
I'm sometimes amazed that there is enough clay left under KX to keep the whole lot from collapsing into an abyss.

I'm sure it would be far simpler in engineering terms to demolish the entirety of Kings Cross, St Pancras and surrounding buildings, excavate a massive crater and start again from scratch starting at the bottom.

Heck, why stop there? We could just dig up all of London and start again from scratch, trying to keep everything a bit neater while we're at it. *g*

For the Northern and Piccadilly Lines, I presume. But what about the Victoria Line? I've seen what looks like a new escalator next to the new lift (both on plans and recently in the flesh when the worksite door was open). Is that not so?

i work at kings cross station and there is a heck of allot of work going on behind the scenes for the knew ticket hall which is due to open in november i think of this year (i may ave that wrong) yes escalators 456 (from ticket hall to picc concourse) does look shabby but this is minor works compaired to the brand knew ticket hall that is opening up plus the northern line excalators are getting refurbished as we speak one at a time to refurb an escalator is a majot task and takes allot of man power and work into getting it back into service
