I have seen photos of P89 stock with the 'Docklands Light Rail' logo, but did any P86s get this?

Nope. The corporate logo remained the single word 'Docklands' until 1994. The only difference brought about was in 1991, when a 'LIGHT RAIL' roundel was added to the right of it (looking like the UNDERGROUND roundel but with a light blue horizontal strip - cf. tfl.moonfruit.com/dlr). The roundel would also have been what originally appeared on the front (or 'nose') of the P89s in 1991. This was short-lived though and these would have later been obscured (covered over). I remember reading that an 'experimental petrol blue' livery was tried on one or two vehicles but that this was also short-lived. I've seen no photos of it though. I think the idea was to introduce that at the same time as the new logo, but the final decision was to use the 'new' logo on top of the 'old' colour scheme. I'm pretty sure the new petrol blue ('teal' or 'dark turquoise' to you and me) colour, and the DOCKLANDS LIGHT RAIL ====== logo were brought in for the Beckton extension - i.e. they appeared first on the Beckton line stations, appearing on trains and other stations later on.

www.urbanrail.net/eu/vrr/essen-ex-docklands-1.jpgThe P89 in this photo being converted to run in Essen has a 'Docklands Light Rail' logo. The last 4 P86s last ran in service at the same time as the P89s (in 1995), so why wouldn't any P86s have got that logo? 'London Underground Rolling Stock' says that B92 unit 45 was painted in 'Petrol blue and grey'. There was also an experimental livery on B90 unit 40 that was similar to the new livery but was blue and green (instead of red and blue).

Vehicle 40 actually had two experimental liveries on it - one on each side. One side had a prototype of the mainly red with blue stripe and roundel which is what ended up developing into the one currently in use, and the other side had the turquoise and blue variant you mention, which was the livery I was *hoping* they'd use. I somehow suspected that they would choose the awful red one, just to be perverse. Which rather predictably they proceeded to do. My guess is for DDA they wanted to choose the most garish colour combination possible, rather than choose the colour scheme that would look best to the majority of the population with eyesight of sufficient quality to actually appreciate the colour scheme.

But we're not allowed "colour scheme that would look best to the majority of the population with eyesight of sufficient quality" because the minority, no matter how small a group, have to dictate to the majority....

Surely though a livery could be designed that looks good to those who can appreciate it, but is also good for those with limited eyesight. London Underground's livery proves it is possible.

I would like to see a DLR version of the Underground/Overground/Tramlink scheme - white base, blue lower band and teal doors & roof
