Yesterday, I was travelling from Lewisham at around 8 in the evening, with my parents' dog - a well behaved, fairly small Springer Spaniel. I got on to a quiet train at Lewisham, and shortly afterwards was instructed to move by the Passenger Service Agent, on the grounds that my dog (who was tucked under the seat beneath me) might bite someone sitting in the seat behind me (which was empty). Although I said that I would look after her, I was left in no doubt that this was an instruction, not a request, to move to a seat away from the front of the train, and that this was standard practice for all customers with "pets" Having checked the DLR conditions of carriage, ( www.visitdocklands.co.uk/pdf/DLR-Conditions-of-Carriage.pdf ) I can find no evidence to support this requirement , and it makes me wonder if the PSA was simply being officious or had a personal dislike of dogs? It spoiled my ride ( I had originally sat at the front on the right of the PSA's desk, and was made to sit on a sideways seat in the middle of the carriage).

I was on the DLR earlier, and there was a dog sitting ON the front seat, very close to the PSA. Again, nothing was said.

MarkP, You get people who like nothing more than giving orders in all walks of life, best to try and not to let it get to you.

It is indeed sad how some people can only get through the day by self-satisfying themselves over "what a big man they are" by seeing how many people they can boss around like schoolchildren regardless of whether it's appropriate or not. Anyway, I wonder if we've stumbled upon the identity of the unnecessarily officious staff member?
As for naivety or otherwise of postings, it's quite telling that this particular fact was overlooked:
"might bite someone sitting in the seat behind me (which was empty). "

I don't mind dogs on trains, but its very annoying when people put there dog ON a seat !! Yuk!
Yesterday there was a tramp and his dog on a thameslink train, it was disgusting, train was packed too !!
Anyway MarkP I wouldn't worry too much... he was probably just a tad overzealous. Sometimes its best to just humour these people and do what they say with a smile!
