Hello,
I'm new to the underground and fairly new to this site so this may have already been covered as it sounds quite a famous situation...
Why are the station staff at these two station so grumpy and military style? It costs nothing to smile and nothing for manners so why do they feel they can talk to people like dirt and treat them likewise....?
Does anyone else have experience with this?

I was rostered on the gateline at Waterloo for nearly two years and found the people there very good to work with, I still keep in contact with a fair few of them now and have fond memories of the characters I have met. However, the style of the Jubilee line run groups in Zone One is a bit different to other lines. It is far harder work on these groups and this may show sometimes but trust me, they are a good bunch!!! It may well be that a member of the public has been 'grumpy' or 'spoken to them like dirt' with a member of staff/group of staff which always ruins the atmosphere somewhat.

The Jubilee line, particularly extension is a prison camp.. for drivers and stn staff (as said on the extension).
More or less everyone is depressed ! Look at WPK TCD , last time I checked over 100 drivers on waiting list to get out... that line is HELL for all staff !!

Waterloo is infamous on the network for having some rude supervisors. As to London Bridge, thats my group, I think I know to whom you are referring to....if you want you can send me a PM [private message] feel free.

Stations which won all those wonderful architectural awards when they were opened ! Little weekend work for the past couple of years .....

Actually for the station staff working on a weekend is more grief with no service, than when they have a service.. This is because the idiots don't check before they travel then station staff get it in the neck

This is because the idiots don't check before they travel This is possibly because it's somewhat novel, out there in the real world, to have to check a public service is working as normal before you plan to use it. I don't have to check if the gas supply is working before inviting the neighbours round for lunch. I don't have to check if Tesco have closed for the weekend before going out to the supermarket. I don't even have to check if the bus service is working before going out for it. Because in all these cases they have managed to organise themselves that such events are sufficiently rare that their customers don't need to do this.

Im referring to the stn supers when trying to book into the stn Oh I see....yes indeed, there are some ‘bulldogs’ on the group, but it was stricter when I was about, things are more liberal now than they were! When Eurostar was about it was a lot harder, when the international service went to Kings Cross, they got a purpose built booking hall, French speaking staff and dedicated leaflets and information for the continental traffic. We had nothing like that and things were very busy. The Jubilee line, particularly extension is a prison camp.. for drivers and stn staff (as said on the extension).... that line is HELL for all staff !! Yes indeed....that is what I was getting at before (but ducking around saying it!).....it certainly is different. I went on the Jubilee after starting off on the Central line, loved it on the red line. It was like working for a different company after I moved. Well I know, but the thing is LU is not Tescos or the gas board so I would rather spend a couple of minutes looking at the site before I leave home than have travel disaster! I myself don’t drive so public transport is important to me and it makes my life easier if it all works properly. Sometimes I see the works as a challenge...figuring out the shortcuts by bus and even walks between stations, have knocked quite some time off a journey before (and I don’t use Journey Planner, have always done things myself). But ultimately what Happybunny means is that it’s not fun for staff either – far from it.

Because in all these cases they have managed to organise themselves that such events are sufficiently rare that their customers don't need to do this. Why do you need to invite somebody? Or is that a form of planning.......... What you often do need to do is: Check that there are no roadworks/ accidents when you drive to appointment. Phone a store before making a long special journey. The truth is you actually don't need to plan ahead when traveling in London - if the tube is closed for planned work there are always alternatives, albeit not as convenient. Although I disagree with the term "idiots", I can personally vouch that it isn't pleasent to be abused, swore at, spat at and generally moaned at, why I have closed a line again and delayed an individuals journey. But then, as I'm constantly told, I should be lucky to actually have a job. Oh and I also use the rail network and I'm as inconvienced by engineering work as the public are. But then I end up spending 8/12 further hours being inconvienced and then have to get home. But hey, I've got a job.......

Bulldogs when referring to the stn supers at these two stations is an understatement. I'm sure it's easier to rule with an iron fist when booking in 70 odd contractors, half of who don't speak English, into your station, but even so you can do it with a smile. If I ever end up that miserable and apparently twisted for no reason whatsoever then my life has been a huge failure. Could we start a petition to get them to cheer up a bit or maybe a sponsered smile the next time children in need is on perhaps, maybe if it was for charity they would smile even if it was only a bit.....!!! Really really sad..! Perhaps I should have listed this in the rant section?

If they are as forbidding as you say, then bearing their nashers would perhaps do nothing to detract from their fearsomness...!

If I ever end up that miserable and apparently twisted for no reason whatsoever then my life has been a huge failure. ;D I agree. I try to be as nice as I can in life. Funnily enough, mentioning sponsored smiles, they do actually have quite a big thing on the Waterloo group for the 'Help a London Child' campaign every year (about this time of year too), but I have never seen an SS take part (actually I did see one in panto style fancy dress a couple of years ago, but he left the company a little while ago)
