This post adds on to that found in the Historical board.
Also found a list in my Grandad's collection, simply titled London Transport Signalling Location Codes.
A couple have question marks [?] next to them, and some are not listed at all - maybe they werent used, again, theres only vague clues to a year, and even this is a rough estimate. Three of the codes were written on a peice of paper, stuck to an old issue of Londons Underground, it has a fold out map at the back of it, in which I fould the list of signal location codes - BTW, the map has the Victoria Line terminating at Vic - theres no Brixton extension shown - this might give an indication as to the year that the survey of signal codes was carried out.
FC - uncaptioned FE - uncaptioned
There were a few others, which I managed to identify by looking at our fuhrer's website. ;D

There was an offical drawing issued at some stage with the cabin codes on it. I've got a copy at home (albiet in bits as it was a PITA to photocopy). Unfortunately I can't remember the drg. number offhand, and the big book of drawig numbers going back to 1933 has disappeared from our office.

FNX is used for floodgates at London Bridge on the Northern Line. In the case of the District FN might have been the old interlocking for Upminster East, which allowed access to the depot.

As a rule if it was two IMR's controlling one area they normally had the same code. The exception was West Ken.
The FNX code is specifically 'Floodgate Northern'. Incidentally the Bakerloo and Victoria don't use FBX or FVX, instead it's X on the Bakerloo and FX on the Vic (Says he who once had to attend to FX403 and FX405 failing to clear).

I'll answer the original without detracting from the replies for which many thanks.
The code FN was originally intended for a cabin for Upminster depot in what is now the control tower. The depot was going to be controlled by proper signals. I don't know what put the kybosh on that. It may have been the floodgate numbers on the Northern (When were they numbered?) Then someone thought of the loudspeaker idea and that was adopted instead much to the chagrin of the locals to this day.
EDIT: By the way there was once aproposal for the control tower in Upminster depot to have the ability to input train numbers and destinations for trains leaving the depot. I don't know what became of that.
I also remember something about trains drivers setting up their own routing at terminal points. This was to consist of a box with a keypad and list of destinations inside it. The driver was supposed to input his train number and push the button for his terminal point and then activate the thing.
Something else that mysteriously vanished.

nope the control tower at upminster just sends the train towards the platform upto if my memory serves me right FM1 then the upminster cabin takes over and selects the required t/d
tom at queens pk south shed dont they have a train number unit so that displays to the driver what the number should be ?

Yes and the feed MCB keeps tripping out. They appear in a few other places as well, including Sth Harrow, High Barnet, Arnos, & Woodford (and those are just the sites I can think of off the top of my head). When the number comes up the driver hits the plunger telling the signalman which road the train is on. The loudspeaker system was already in use at other places when Upminster depot was commissioned, one of those was South Harrow, in those days remotely controlled by Rayners Lane.

one of those was South Harrow, in those days remotely controlled by Rayners Lane. As it was until 1978 when it was given into the tender mercies of Earl's Court.

IIRC Neasden has got speakers at the south end also. As for the bit about the control tower it was exactly the same when I worked in it.
