While we're on the subject of cabin codes - on the District we have EC (Earls Court), ED (High st), all the way up to EN (Whitechapel). They all go in order which is nice, except; EH (Embankment) then EG (Mansion House). Why is that?

Mansion House was originally EI and when the cabin was done away with some bright spark realised that under the criterion that A,I,O,R, X were never used on semi's had the cabin code changed. (and yes I do know that the dreaded letters are used (all of them) elsewhere on the combine)

What's wrong with I and O? They're easily confused with other letters and digits.

So how long has the the Met been using O - Aldgate (OB), Edgware Rd (OP), Hammersmith (OZ), these are the only ones I know !

They are amoung the exceptions. As the 'O' comes before the second letter and not after it, there is less chance of mistaking it for a number rather than a letter. Besides, even mistaking it for a number would not lead to too much confusion.

I could add significantly to that list of cabin codes, but the last time I did on the T/Op bases someone complained, See: Thanks Jim for the help here but I was thinking that the tread will be longer Besides it's too much typing ;D ;D

(and yes I do know that the dreaded letters are used (all of them) elsewhere on the combine) Going back to the original question, while rooting around for something else I came across a couple of documents which confirm that Mansion House was indeed code EI and for a time at least it remained so after transfer of control of the area to Earls Court in 1969. The code EG was originally in use at St James's Park where there used to be a cabin controlling a crossover.
