this is from a extract of the standard for signal heads,signs and indicators
all signal aspects are visable from a driving position with the train stopped 1.5 metres away no ghosting can occur due to sunlight and other reflections
but i have seen signals at various locations different sizes i.e east end of district on e/b road most of them are placed on top of signalling equipment cabinets. on the w/b road they are generally at two heights one like the picture above and the other about 3/4 of the height

As far as I can see they're completely random! Some sit about six inches off the floor in the 6 foot, others are up on a gantry over the track.
