I was at Tower Hill in the bay road this evening, with a train destined for Ealing Broadway. The Indicator board had other ideas: The temporary station lighting isn't helpful, but you get the idea. I couldn't resist getting a pic to share with you all.

Those light boxes are starting to get rare on the Underground; the ones at Turnham Green vanished a while back after the station modernisation was completed.

Slightly off topic, but what ever happened to that giant yellow box at wembley park that had destinations on it? If I can remember correctly that had the ability to display aylesbury still. I'm sure it was removed during the refurb but did it get preserved?

Looking at the pic I suddenly rememberd the idea of extending the district from richmond through Kingston and back up to Wimbledon that was mentioned in a local paper from that area some time ago. Maybe lul is just playing with the idea

There is one at Upton Park E/B, and although there's one on the W/B, it's only displaying destinations that you can go to from Upton Park, and isn't an actual train destination indicator IIRC

I hope you advised your customers to travel in the correct part of the train, for the detachment at Earl's Court Even the Dot Matrix Indicators sometimes show two destinations, one on each side

At least yours tell you that the train goes somewhere. Our TV screens at Flinders Street are unreadable in light and they flicker. Well the last time I was there. Makes fun gussing what train is next.

I've seen a dot matrix indicator with "See front of train" on it - obviously they didn't know where the next train was going! I also remember at Kings Cross sub-surface seeing "Hammersmith and Whitechappel"...

Or our equivllent. Platform PID: LISTEN FOR ANNOUNCEMENTS Train Destenation: CONNEX It is a bit like travelling northwards from the lower end of the Northern Line. Do not worry what the indicator says, just wait until you get to Kennington. If the platform is on the left the train is going to the City, if it is on the right it is going to Charing Cross (Note: this does not work if you are facing backwards!)

Those with a knowledge of the people controlling this area will know of course, that this not a faulty indicator board. It is in fact an updated version which is capable of showing 3 or more destinations. The more you can show at one time, the less chance you have of getting it wrong....

I've seen a dot matrix indicator with "See front of train" on it - obviously they didn't know where the next train was going! That happens on some lines (I think it's the Jubilee, Northern, and Victoria) where the driver selects the destination, and the train tells the signalling system where it is heading at beacons located at strategic points on the line. If the signalling system doesn't pick up the train destination at the beacons, when you will see the "see front of train" message. If the destination of the train has been changed since the last beacon, then you will see a "correction" message.

the northen line has got PTI Positive Train Indentification i dont know how the newer trains work but on the older ones there was a dial where the just selected a particular number and this was the trains t/d

It's got something called PTI but it sure ain't "positive". By observation, I reckon the NL version of PTI works for about 90% of the time. That leaves 10% of all NL trains with no destination/set number information displayed to the control room people. Just what ya need when the job's up the wall.

'Giant Yellow Box at Wembley Park' (Reply #3)
If its the one I remember it certainly did show Aylesbury and Chesham. I'm not sure about Verney Junction !
The very big Indicators at Baker Street, Main and Edgware Road (!!) showed all individual stations to Aylesbury, etc. and then' Verney Junction Line' Probably E. Road's were disconnected though you could make out some of the names.

getting back to tower hill if both signs (other sign by the way out stairs) show the same double/triple description then the fault is in the sign combinator(relays what takes the t/d codes and then lights up the relevant tube) or if it is only the one on the platform then the fault is actually in the sign itself

I was told by the controller that it was a signalling fault affecting the bay road - this was backed up by my train being described as a Putney Bridge at all stations untill the signaller could intervene at South Kensington.

they can change the t/d at mansion house and embankment aswell Aye... Providing there are actually signallers at those desks to do it! I'm led to believe a lot of the ECT positions have been running on FCFS or whatever setting they use lately.

Yup, the Tower Hill desk has been unstaffed all week at night resulting in a few wrong signals being lowered

usually the machines are left in FCFS as it keeps things moving sometimes the wrong way though ;D ;D ;D ;D
embankment does not have programme machines though
dont surprise me tower hill desk being uncovered as it controls the smaller sites i.e embankment, mansion house, and tower hill

Melbourne Train Indicators -
I find these Indicators work quite well except when trains are being re-formed at Flinders Street when they are sometimes changed. Loudspeaker announcements are usually made.
One complaint - The last indication remains in place for some little time (it is not cancelled as the train passes the Starter) and can be misleading.
