BAET has posted elsewhere about how pneumatic points were retained on the Central Line's section 12 areas due to fears over inflammable hydraulic oil. He also said somewhere else that the Central's air main was left intact because it also feeds the Mk1 air-operated ticket gates found at many of the stations along the route.
Will later ATO upgrades on the various lines dispense with the use of the air main for trackside equipment altogether? For example, when the Victoria Line goes ATO will it retain pneumatic point machines, or will they be converted to electric?
Likewise, will the SSL's pneumatic points be retained?

For example, when the Victoria Line goes ATO will it retain pneumatic point machines, or will they be converted to electric? The Vic is already ATO and has been since it opened. It doesn't matter when, but will they be converted to electric.

I do wonder, but what is wrong with pneumatics?

Nothing, but no one makes them anymore, you can only overhaul parts so many times. The Jubilee is supposed to be getting Surelocks as part of the upgrade.

Surelocks are an electric machine manufactured by Westinghouse, they are modulised so are easy to maintain.

There is a surelock installed at Wembley, though I'm not sure which set of points.
The article is quite interesting, even if I would dispute some of the claims about the maintenance elements of the paper. The feeler gauges mentioned don't check for nosed dabs, they check for correct adjustment (positioning) of the lock blade ports in relation to the dabs. The 1/16" gauge used off air checks for nosing.
Oh, and I recognise the drawing of the 4' mechanism. I wonder if the Signals Training Centre have been credited?

the 1/16" gauge is not a maintenance gauge its only a installation gauge by rights by this has been brought into practice for maintenance how many times have you seen this gauge being used when doing maintenance tom i bet not that often

Are there plans to lengthen a set of points in the area?

no it helps move the back of the switches sometimes by the use of another motor but usually by a mechnical crank really on used on long switches (high speed moves)

Some were better than others. and has westinghouse sorted out the problem with the low profile points which use suplementry drives yet? as there is a set been waiting at south ken now for nearly a year now waiting to be installed Not that I know about. There are lots of issues with supplementary drives at the moment so I don't expect things to be cleared up quickly.
