A little bird tells me that it isn't going to be normally manned after Saturday 29th January. Is this true, or does the cynic in me think that reversing at Whitechapel will stop in accordance with the pay cycle!? I await further news.

Well, West Ham siding is due to be commissioned this weekend ready for start of traffic on Monday morning, subject to all the objectors signing it off (Union bods have been making a fuss about the width of the walkways ). As I'm sure you know, once West Ham is in place the Whitechapel works can begin in earnest. Now this will start with platform 4 being hoarded off and the platform extended out to the new alignment (essentially what was 25 siding) to become the westbound road. AFAIA there will still be two eastbound roads whilst this work goes on so it would seem a little premature to be removing the signalmen already. Whitechapel is also used as a regulating point and will still retain crossovers at both ends of the station when the work is complete, so to go straight into auto through working with the king levers would seem a bit hasty to say the least......

Why were reversing faciclties necessary at West Ham before work could begin? I thought Whitechapel reversing was discontinued in December 2009 with all trains running through to Plaistow or Barking.

Timetabled reversing yes but Whitechapel has remained available for reversing during service recovery following an incident, a service requirement (ie, unplanned train service suspension) or planned engineering works. In fact it was used extensively during the strikes late last year as well as recently during a cancellation of weekend engineering works.
It has been deemed necessary to replace the Whitechapel reversing facilities with some form of alternative and the centre siding at west Ham was the answer.
Because West Ham is replacing Whitechapel, Whitechapel has remained available until West Ham was completed. West Ham is now complete and available for use, so the remodelling work at Whitechapel will soon begin...

From start of traffic on Monday 31 January 2011, platforms 1 and 4 will be taken out of use and hoardings erected. All eastbound trains will use platform 2, all westbound trains will use platform 3. There will be no reversing moves possible at Whitechapel from this date. This is part of the Crossrail enabling works.

Well yes but apparently because West Ham is devoid of TDs it won't be used for the time being other than in an emergency or for rusty rail moves, until April I believe.

There will be no reversing moves possible at Whitechapel from this date. This is part of the Crossrail enabling works. Can confirm that this was in place this morning. With the dark blue hoardings and big overbridge, the platforms suddenly have an being underground feel to them. Hoardings are in place on both platforms with just two lines (the centre pair) now available for use.
