Can DLR CSA's join ASLEF? I think most are in the RMT.

If CSAs on the DLR do the same job as CSAs on LUL then no, the Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen is train drivers only. However they could join TSSA, I was a member when I worked on stations.
If DLR CSAs are what used to be called “train captains” then I’m not sure, best to contact head office.

Thanks Aslefshrugged. Yes I meant the former Train Captains. I'm unsure if they are recognised as drivers since the DLR is advertised as a driverless railway.

As I suggested have a word with head office see what they say, who knows it could be the start of a new branch. On the subject of driverless do they move in and out of the sidings and depots under their own control or do you have to shunt them around manually like we do on the Central? The Chairman of TfL thinks all trains operating in ATO can drive themselves without human help, shows how much he knows.

I believe shunt movements are done under manual control.

I believe that all DLR CSAs are trained how to drive the train in all modes, including restricted manual (if that is what the mode is called on the DLR) so they can move the train in the event of a complete code failure. Also, when the train is being operated from the front and the train and system are working as they should, I imagine that the DLR CSA's job is not materially dissimilar from the job Central Line t/ops do when their trains and systems are working as they should.
