I came across a video on Youtube earlier about the previous W&C Line stock. It then showed an 8 car (Two 4 Car trains together) 1992 stock train in the old blue W&C livery arriving at Stratford Station.
Were the 1992 stock trains destined for the W&C line tested on the Central Line?

The ten Class 482 2-car units were delivered to Ruislip depot in March 1993 and were test run as 8-car trains on the Central Line before they were delivered to the Waterloo & City line in May and June.
They share the same basic design as 92s but aren't as sophisticated, they don't even have aircon in the driver's cab.

When the 92 stock was being tested, I worked in an office overlooking the Central Line at Leytonstone. I used to see both the Central and W&C stock go past, each in 8-car sets. So I saw two W&C cabs together. Unfortunately I didn't ever take my camera to work. I never saw the stock coupled to each other.

Each 2-car unit has a cab, they run on the W&C as 4-car trains with a cab at each end so when test running on the central as 8-car trains there would have been 4 cabs. As the W&C 482s and the Central 92s aren't exactly the same I doubt if you could have a train with mixed stock.

So I saw two W&C cabs together. What couplers do the driving ends of W&C units have? Actually, why do they need couplers at all?

I believe they were the same when they were built. It's just that the 1992 stock have had something like 300+ modifications since those days!

I love how many directions are posted, look at the 3rd picture, you have A and B for the cabs obviously so the units don't get put in the wrong way... then there's a sign pointing North on the wall... then spraypainted on the wall do I see UP and DOWN markings with arrows so people don't forget?

And yet they still managed to muck up how they went back at first.

So there was a gap of a month or 2 between the last old train and the first new one in service?

If I recall correctly, the entire line was closed for about 6 months

According to Wikipedia it was closed from 1 April to 11 September 2006, so just over 5 months

I think Scary may be referring to the changeover from the Class 487's to the 482's which I believe (correct me if I'm wrong) the line was closed for 3 weeks.

CULG suggests that it was closed from 28 May to 19 July 1993 "to convert to four rail power", which would be for the new stock. Timeanddate.com gives this as 1 month 21 days (52 days, or 7 weeks and a weekend).

Theres a picture of the two of them side by side in Waterloo depot... I think. Saw it in a book about Waterloo Stations history.

CULG suggests that it was closed from 28 May to 19 July 1993 "to convert to four rail.[/quote In the middle of the Blitz the W&C was closed for one weekend in October to exchange the original 42-year old trains trains for new ones and simultaneously convert the electrification from its original system to standard Southern Railway practice. 53 years later, bad old inefficient British Rail took seven weeks to convert the the line to four-rail for the third generation of trains, which are still running on the system today. Thirteen years later, in 2006, it took the super-efficient privatised PPP 23 weeks to do..........what, exactly? Such is progress.

There is a photo of a unit at Ruislip Gardens on the back cover of the June 1999 edition of 'Underground News' still in NWSE livery. It states that there was an intention to transfer the stock to the Central Line but this has now been abandoned.

I don't think you can blame the 23 weeks purely on the privatisation. As the units were given an overall whilst the line was shut they all had to be taken away. It would be quite hard to run a service with no trains

There was an intention to transfer the units to the Central, but this was abandoned because they (the W&C units) would have needed lots of mods to operate on there. I accompanied a test run one evening when they were new and before they went to the W&C, which should have gone from Ruislip depot to Epping, but (even an empty train!) we were turned short at Debden. Managed to get a pic at Lancaster Gate EB.

Without wishing to dragg it into another topic, would it still prove advantageous to give the Central a couple of extra trains?

I think Scary may be referring to the changeover from the Class 487's to the 482's which I believe (correct me if I'm wrong) the line was closed for 3 weeks. Yes I was, thanks. There's a poster in the video which gives the reopen date. The need to add a new power rail would explain the need for the closure, I was wondering why they didn't run both sets at the same time.

I was wondering why they didn't run both sets at the same time. Even if you could have run either type on the other system (bonding the negative to earth perhaps?), have you seen Waterloo depot? There isn't room for the existing fleet to all be in it at once - so adding more vehicles would be out of the question!
