As much as I agree with you trivran, Stratford International isn't actually Westfield Stratford City's closest station. Stratford International is actually located on the north of the mall with about a 5 minute walk from the DLR Station (1-2 minutes from South Eastern Station) whereas Stratford Regional's Northern Ticket Hall is actually built into Westfield itself. The Northern Ticket Hall is finished and will open with Westfield. So DLR won't actually use Westfield Stratford City as an excuse to hurry up. Closest station entrance maybe, but what will the comparable walking time be from DLR Stratford Regional platforms and from DLR Stratford International platforms? I doubt that there will be much in it and like at Shepherd's Bush, I'm sure that Westfield will like public transport access at both sides of the site ready before they open. Yes but at Shepherds Bush all the stations come from different directions whereas at Stratford International DLR you have to come through Stratford Regional and it would be much quicker to just get off there rather than continue to Stratford International and walk back.

Why do they need a closure so soon after it's opened?

Why do they need a closure so soon after it's opened? It isn't just that section that will be closed. It will be Poplar - Beckton/Woolwich Arsenal as well. Unfortunately this will always be the case due to the Canning Town junctions and the location of the main depot at Beckton. There isn't space at Poplar to store sufficient units to run the Stratford International service as well as the other services.

Ah so it's not the new bit's fault.

Does anyone know a likely opening date? It's almost a year late now! August 22nd is what I can tell by reading through this forum.

DLR trains now seem to have the new maps over the doors showing the Stratford International routes as if they existed already, so it must be soon!

Lots of testing on the Stratford Internation DLR Line this morning, all trains are 2 units running every 4 mins east and westbound.

Isn't that a Bank Holiday? The original DLR opened on Bank Holiday Monday 31 August 1987 - would be a happy coincidence!

I'm pretty sure it's juts to Canning Town. There were no 'special's or similar on the Beckton-branch DMIs and the train I saw between Stratford and Statford High Street as I passed on the Jubilee said "Canning Town" on the side. I think the barriers east of Canning Town (at least to the Beckton Branch) were still there but I'm not 100% certain.

Did DWS say that there will only be 2-car trains operating on the route? Surely that's a bit of a blow to TfL's over publicised 3 car train upgrade. And 4 minute gaps between trains? Hmm... A little better than I expected.

DMI = Dot Matrix Indicator. The electronic display on the platforms that shows the times and destinations of the next trains or special announcements.
As for 2-car trains, it has been repeatedly said that there is simply not enough rolling stock to run all services as three-car trains, nor other services that may be desirable - see a new thread I've created specifically to discuss this.
Presumably three-car trains will operate between Stratford International and Custom House during the Olympics (both stations serve Olympic venues) and maybe also subsequently for any special events.

Those of us condemned to the Woolwich Arsenal leg are still suffering 2-car trains. Frequently on the westbound trip, the train fills up before it leaves Woolwich Arsenal and gets to bursting point long before it reaches Bank.

I have been told that the Stratford International DLR extension's opening has slipped back (yet again).
First it was supposed to be on the 22nd August, then the 29th and from what I have heard, it is now scheduled to be in mid-September.
Undoubtedly, if I have my facts right, we won't see the summer opening that we were promised, and I can imagine that mid-September is a bit optimistic also, considering whenever I visit Stratford, tools are sprawled all over the platform and most of the line (Stratford Int - Canning Town) looks pretty unfinished
Can anybody shed a little light on the situation, as to why the opening keeps slipping back so regularly and also, when we can honestly expect the extension to open? Am I pushing my luck asking to be able to ride on it before Christmas? (I wouldn't be surprised)
Thanks, martello736

Well, Canning Town has been a problem. Not prepared to put in writing the reason, even though I am all but anonymous on here. Suffice to say, today the workforce at Canning Town have been jet washing the platforms, cleaning down surfaces etc. In other words, the works there are complete.
The 29th is a good bet for opening, a week of ghost service running is scheduled from next Monday.

Just a small correction. The platform displays are PIDs - Passenger Information Displays. They have always been known as this on DLR, having inherited the term from the original Alcatel software.

Really? Well, you're judgement is probably better than mine. Weren't they going to do ghost service running in July? Did something happen that pushed that back?

If it is later than currently expected, could it tie in with the opening of Westfield Stratford on 13/9 ??

The 29th is a good bet for opening, a week of ghost service running is scheduled from next Monday. London Reconnections say they are "95% certain" it will be 29th, but without identifying their source - of course, their source could be this very forum.

There was a lot of frantic jet-washing at Canning Town this morning. And one guy just standing there yawning & stretching. That might be another reason as to why it's taking so long!

I reckon that about 30% of the workforce could be fired and the same amount of work done. If TfL employed some undercover people to watch the builders at work, they'd get a fair idea of who's pulling their weight and who isn't
