Starnge isn't it how one manufacturer can never get everything right when they design train equipment.
BTH for instance made good controllers but their motors weren't up to much. G.E.C. made good motors but the controllers were rubbish. Metvickers never made anything much good really. English Electric made superb motors but the undercar control stuff was too complicated.
The best trains it seems are a mixture of all the best bits from different makers.

You talking of Controllers has got me going... in 2001, I rescued parts from a 59ts DM, 1163. Looking rather folorn she was, I armed myself with a toolkit, and permission obviously[!] and approached old lady. First, into the cab. The first thing to go were the train number flappers, a set of 3. Next came the Destination Box, removed she was. I then got some help to remove the Master Controller and the gubbins underneath, along with the Brake Handle and more gubbins. Looking furtively around for summat else, my eyes met with the Duplex gauge. Ha ha, she is MINE. By now, I'd spent nearly 2 hours JUST in the cab, I then casually looked into the saloon and decided that 2 seats would also become mine. I'm glad the van I hired was big enough. I commandeer a works trolley, and convey the haul of goodies out to the van. As I'm loading it in, with the help of a mate, the Depot Manager saunters over and shouts "Why don't you just take the whole f***kin thing eh? I'll even PAY YOU to take the bleeding thing outta here!" Sarcastic Response followed. back in the works, I then discover a cab door tread with a screw missing. Soon, all the screws were missing and it werent long before the door tread went walkies too! I stand there and admire the cab, missine a few essentials - I just hope they dont decide to put her back into service, because they'll be a bit stuck. As a final token, the Defect Log dissappeared to someones pocket. Not much else I could do...apart from get these items home. And the cost of my wants was a suitable donation to the line's chosen charity... Three days later, she was on a low loader heading to Booths...

As I've stated in other threads I LOVED those trains. I had many good rides on the Northern and I've even got a soft spot for 72's now.

If any one's intrested i am in contact whith a man ho has DM 1018 T 2018 and DM 1304 in his garden and also has T 2304 and NDM 9305 in store. He is also considering buying DM 1305 from the Sutton Hall Railway, which would mean that unit 1304 (the only compleat suviving unit) could be reformed and 1018/2018 would be used for spaers. If any one is intrested in contacting him please send me a pm.

When the time comes, I'll hopefully be doing the same thing at Neasden with the A's.

The bodywork won't be a problem, but the underframe was steel on these units. Trust it to be the most difficult part of the train to get to thats prone to corrosion. :)Apparently, the 62ts underframes who's cars were built by BREL were particularly prone to corrosion. Think it was the NDM's IIRC.
