Going back to the BR days, I was working the W&C one day, ran into Waterloo on the arrivals side, only to notice a huge curly thinh sticking out of the tunnel roof, curling round over the running rails and going back up to the roof. Luckily this was beyond the shunt signal at the end of the platform, so I stopped at the normal place. What's more interesting was that this curly thing was getting longer. It was about 3" diameter and looked like a cable. My thoughts, high tension, traction cable, WTF?? So the service came to a halt while this was investigated. About 20 minutes later this thing retracted and disappeared back into the tunnel roof. It turned out contractors were installing cables for cable tv under the station access road; the cable passed through a metal cable tray over the track and had found a hole in the tray and gone downwards onto the track! It could only happen to me.

Good thing the cable didn't get electrified, otherwise lots of TV's would suddenly explode... By the way; How are TV cables ever supposed to get into a tube?

... By the way; How are TV cables ever supposed to get into a tube? They get the cables for Outside Broadcast cameras through 2 or 3 inch pipes to the roundabout outside Buckingham Palace by attaching a line to the cable and the line to a trained ferret!

I don't mean that - I mean how are TV cables supposed to get into a galvanized iron tube (aka, London Underground tube)

I don't mean that - I mean how are TV cables supposed to get into a galvanized iron tube (aka, London Underground tube) There are all sorts of cable ducts throughout the Underground, linking in with the tunnels. Also, the tunnel segments aren't galvanized. (Sorry - couldn't think of any more rodent jokes, despite raccoon my brains...)

What material are the tubes then made of?
