Do our older members remember the LT canteens?Griffin Tea,Christmas hampers. Two questions have always bugged me about these canteens:why did the food always seem to taste better in bus canteens? Why was their swede always bright orange when the ones you buy in the shops are more of a yellow colour?

As an aside to this 'ere. In my time the best canteens on the tube were Barking and Wembley Park. Leytonstone was middlng and the finest they ever had was Newbury Park. Without a doubt the worst was Earl's Court.
What's the situation today?

If you're lucky enough to work at Nf, you get a really nice vending machine...

I've been inside Earls Courts Canteen, it's well looked after and clean, they also do a delicious serving of ‘Pie and Mush‘! ;D

The last time I was there a couple of years back it was an Indian takeaway.

When I was at Loughton station a few weeks back, there was both a cab office and an Indian takeaway. As that was my first visit to the station, I don't know which was the old canteen.
I wish I'd had my camera with me at the time as there was an excellent notice. It was a saturday when the trains were terminating there because of engineering work on the route to Epping. The sign said something like: All trains to London are departing from platfoms x and y becuase of engineering works. There are no trains to Epping. If you want to get to Epping, turn around and get a bus. If you want to go to London, find a train and get on it, it's going to London, trains can only go to there from here. It couldn't be simpler.

I remeber a poster outside Golders Green during the strike - No Service on all lines - buses overcrowded, walking seems to be the best option...
I havent used a canteen in ages - apart from the food quality, I resent being charged 20p just to fill a cup with hot water... I find a certain takeaway just outside Shepherds Bush more appetising; you look forward to it on the walk from White City, and burn most of it off on the walk back.

As you leave the station there used to be a cab officejust in the entrance to your left then in a detached building next door was an Indian take away, this was the canteen, it was used by bus and train crew.

My only experience of an Underground canteen, is at Leytonstone whilst on rail replacement; I bought a roll and it had mold on it.

The best staff canteens I have ever eaten at were the ones in Spain. This picture is from the canteen at Puerta Atocha in Madrid, and shows what they brought out while we were thinking about what soup we wanted to start with, and if we wanted the grilled fish or the beef stew. The salad was very nice, too, and the creme caramel that was served for dessert was lovely. Of course, it also prompted a heated discussion between our french, catalonian and italian delagates over whether this was a crema catalunya, a creme caramel or even a flan caramela. Never get between a bunch of anarchists and their dessert.

Wasn't there an underground canteen at Seven Sisters between the platforms? It often smelled of chips and beans down there (circa 1990) !

Why was their swede always bright orange when the ones you buy in the shops are more of a yellow colour? i remember the old griffin teabags very well, you had to put at least three of them in your mug as they were so weak, the food in the bus canteens has always been better quality, especially uxbridge , the most popular item on their menu there was " a busmans grill " a quarter pounder a fried egg and double chips and beans . in the days the old white city training centre , the burgers they served there were like cardboard, hardly anyone ( except the instructors used to eat there ) .. we would all trek down to goldhawk road bus garage for our dinner, the food there was excellent . acton town canteen used to be very good as well, sepecially when hazel was in charge , but alas it has fallen by the wayside, it is currently being refurbished, so we will see whats it is like when it re opens

Sounds just like the same story in White City canteen today.... thats why i started using the KFC in Sheppy Bush! [And thats also the reason why I've ballooned in weight from 70kg to 85kg since I've been on the job. I'm now down to a more easy-to-put-jeans-on 74kg.
