According to a chap I know - he caught one of the new trains this morning for a normal commute.

I was told on a new train today that there is one new train in service, since yesterday. It was doing Bank-Lewisham yesterday, Bank-George today.

Those photos all show the same unit (106). What was the other one in the train? (I'm guessing it was 105)

Yes it was 105, not best-placed sun/shadow-wise so not included in my pix

What is the on board CIS (i.e. DVA/DMI) like?

I was lucky enough to catch the new train (105+106) from Bank to Stratford this evening (the unusual route was due to the closure of westferry/Poplar to Lewisham and Canning Town - King George V sections) meaning the electrical interference (reported on the original London Connections blog iirc) at Stratford must have been solved.
Photos tomorrow or Monday of the interior at Stratford and en route and the exterior at Stratford.

What is the on board CIS (i.e. DVA/DMI) like? As far as I could tell, the DVA was identical to the old stocks. The DMI is green, rather than red or yellow but otherwise the same. Chris

Eh? The DMIs are *quite* different!
The external ones, for instance, are more pixels high so the characters are a lot taller.
The internal ones are less pixels high meaning the characters are a lot fatter. The scroll speed has been significantly increased to pack the same amount of information in, but more significantly on both internal and exterior DMIs, the character sets have been changed to ones with double-pixel vertical strokes, making the characters 'fuller' and stand out more from a distance.

Thank you for the feedback! Shame to hear that the voice-over artist is the same ): But on the other hand, the DMIs sound a lot easier to read.

One design feature is the lack of an external centre door open push button. The theory is that people boarding will have to use the side buttons and therefore not block those alighting. We shall see!!

I suppose there's a definite logic to that - will certainly be interesting to see if it works!

Certainly wasn't the case when I got off a new train at Canary Wharf the other day - folks actually stood in the middle of the two doors, obviously thinking that pushing those back inside who are trying to get off is a good idea ... so what do you do - you use your elbows and straighten your shoulders ;D The DVA either wasn't working or was turned off - either way, it was a lovely silence. Punctuated by the very annoying shriek of the door open noise

Situations like this are one of the few times I find it beneficial to be a reasonably well built skinhead.

About 6 times now over the past 8 years when I've finally had enough and shouted to everyone (well, simply spoken out in a loud voice, theatre-fashion), "could we have a little space for those of us wishing to get OFF, please?" I've had everyone stare at me in disgust, at least 4 people each time loudly shouting "f*** off" to me, and about a dozen others all suddenly saying to each other, "we can do without mental cases like that in Canary Wharf" and similar. One person even once said to me, "just because YOU'RE in a bad mood doesn't mean you have to drag the rest of us down into it". I hate to generalise, but I have a VERY low opinion of people who work in Canary Wharf (those who still do... hah!) because not one of them seem to have even 1/16th-of-an-ounce of manners or common human decency. The Wharf seemed a MUCH friendlier place before the Citigroup, HSBC and Barclays towers opened. It was right around then this aggressive atmosphere began to develop. But like the Murphy's, I'm not bitter.

As has been said - supposedly ''suits'' are the worst behaved on public transport, because they think they're important because they work in a bank or somesuch .... not meaning to generalise, of course

I used to get up and offer my seat when I wore a suit, as a commuter on the Picc.
Pity those rude indviduals that have been mentioned as they may not have a job now!

Talk about sweeping generalisations! Also, comments about people no longer having their jobs is a little on the harsh side. Watching grown men hugging and ladies crying, whilst carrying boxes containing the contents of their desks was not a pleasant thing to witness this week. Whilst I appreciate that office workers may fall under peoples' "inconsiderate passengers" umbrella, it's both a sweeping generalisation and a bit of an insult to those who act nothing like that at all.
Not wishing to come across as having a pop - I hope you understand that - but with thousands of peoples' careers in tatters as a result of this week's events, it's a bit strong to poke fun at their misfortunes, don't you think?

Having been made redundant in the middle of the last terrible recession, January 1990, with a house worth thousands less than the mortgage, and having to take a salary cut of £5000 just to get a job, I can attest to 'being there'. My firm closed one branch and that was it, no room for me! I had a young child, and no job. Fast forward a year or so and my new firm went bust, with two young children and a disabled wife needing support. I have seen banking redundancies before, say back in 1995ish. It's regrettably happened before and it will happen again. I do feel empathy though for those who have regrettably succumbed to the crisis, and hope that they can get back into employment quickly. My brother who used to work in Holborn was made redundant and was out of a job for 2 years.
However. in plain English, if you obstruct the doors, and stop people getting off, people can't get on! It's not a new phenomenon...it was an everyday fact of life on my 8-year commute back from the West End on the Picc. I have to say that there were always some people that just could not grasp this concept. Blowing my own trumpet I used to actually physically get out of the train to allow passengers off, and then get back in again rather than block the doors.

I apologise for making a sweeping generalisation, and of course it won't apply to 100% of people. However, my point is that whereas there used to be a mix of considerate/inconsiderate people, my observation has been that the latter group has dominated the former group so much that the former group are almost entirely extinct.
And what makes anyone think I haven't ever been made redunant before? I've been there too - but I don't see why someone who earns twice or three times more than me deserves to ram people out of their way with their shoulders for going through the same situation as myself and no doubt hundreds and thousands of other people over the years - as if they feel they deserve UN Aid to fund the 2nd mortgage on their 4-bedroom detached in Gerrards Cross or Guildford or something.
Anyway, I do genuinely feel there has been an end to a 'honeymoon period' where the Docklands was seen as a new, exciting place to work, and the DLR itself, and the commentaries the Train Captains (as were) used to give, lent this new "city Mk.2" culture which was frenetic and fast-paced, but good-natured and wide-eyed at the same time. This, I feel, has gone, and has been replaced with the same cut-throat 'couldn't care less' attitude that the square mile became famous for, and it even shows in the style of staff communication at the DLR - more's the pity. (So, my observations are still partly on-topic).

I happened to get the new train for the short Canning Town to East India journey I made today. This was the first time I'd been on it in daylight, and they really are noticeably lighter than the old trains - standing in the door area it almost felt like I was travelling in a greenhouse!

Quick question ... how many new stock units are in service now? If I go out hunting tomorrow (as I have a rare day off) am I likely to find one out and about?

i'm not sure how many trains are running now it might be 3 (101-106) but i'm not sure.
if you wait at poplar long enough one will come along though. if you can be bothered that is. i guess i will be in the same place at the same time eventually. i mean i do the lewisham-bank line everyday and have yet to be on it. probablity says it will happen eventually though....

They're based at Beckton depot, so I'd think your best bet would be to head out that way, as it might be on the Beckton-Canning Town shuttle.
(after a couple of failed previous attempts I finally went on one at the weekend, but only after spotting one accidentally and working out when it would be back)
