The train indicators at West Ham still advise passengers wanting a westbound H&C train to board the first District line train and change at Aldgate East.
But when I have done so, the H&C trains at Aldgate East are full and have obviously come from rather further afield.
Does the official advice make sense?

The ones at East Ham, Upton Park, Plaistow, Bromley, Bow Road, Mile End and Stepney Green give the same message. It was more relevant to a time when H&C services beyond Whitechapel were M-F peak-hours only but now services operate to Barking almost all-day, everyday.

No H&C trains are presently timetabled to start at Whitechapel (or any station between Aldgate East and Barking)

When the middle two platforms at Whitechapel were given up for Crossrail works a new crossover was insstalled east of the West Ham platforms.
Appears to be only used in emergencies so still no benefit in changing at Aldgate East.

Are there no Plaistow reversers in the current timetable?

No H&C trains are presently timetabled to start at Whitechapel (or any station between Aldgate East and Barking) Well, to be very pedantic, we do have a Plaistow reverser at 2358-0016 Mondays to Saturdays, and on Sundays 2329-2339 But. As has been pointed out, the signs hark back to an earlier time, when we only ran a limited service east of Whitechapel/Plaistow. Nowadays, we operate a 10-minute Barking service all day, but it is still worth taking the first train and changing - just in case one of the Barking trains has been reversed short of it's booked destination.

Oh I though that H&City trains regularly reversed at Plaistow in the peaks. Do District Line trains still reverse in the peaks at Plaistow?

The Hammersmith & City timetable is now made up (almost) solely of Hammersmith-Barking services every 10minutes. The District timetable saw regular Richmond-Plaistow services during the Olympics only, but I believe Plaistow is back on the cards for forthcoming timetables.

It's a good spot for short working. Better than West Ham in that there is no time wasted detraining on the platform (or can passengers be reversed in the siding with the train?) but bad in that you have to cross the down line to get out...

That is an interesting point. As all shunt moves could be made using colour light signals and the siding is multidirectional then passengers could be taken into the siding and reversed out. Am I right???

I don't see how it's any different to e.g. terminating at Wimbledon then driving back out - just the line usually goes on further at Plaistow! If it's a colour light signal...!

West Ham siding is indeed fully colour light signalled and there are booked passenger workings through it each day.
The length of the move at reduced speed is what delays departures from Plaistow.
