Nice to see the odd interesting formation on the Bakerloo. The train I was on today was comprised of: 3299-4299-4399-3399+3467-4567-3567 Therefore the unique 4 car unit with the UNDM in the 33XX position coupled to one of the converted 1972 mk1 trains (ex 3412-4512-3512). What alerted me was the charcoal patterns on the walls and the ventilator handles!

I often travel in the UNDM as it stops in the right place for Picc Circus, so I notice if it is the "odd" train. Has there been some change then to the three car part of the formation? Or is this a different train being talked about?

This is (south, leading) 3299-4299-4399-3399 (north, middle). 3399 is an UNDM (the only one to face north) instead of a north-facing middle DM car. Therefore it couples in the middle to another UNDM.

I don't know whether the same 3car unit and 4car unit normally work together, or whether they get swapped around from time to time, e.g to make one good train out of two faulty ones. From ther OPs comments, it looks like the latter, and he was remarking that the current partner of unit 3399 is with another unusual (but not unique ) unit, namely one of the ex Mark 1 sets

They certainly do not work together all of the time. They are swapped around for maintenance from time to time.

I almost always travel in the 32xx car and always look out for unit 3299. I seem not to see it that often (compared with 'regular' units'), though I suspect I have an equal chance of seeing any Bakerloo line unit - excepting any that are long-term stopped of course...

Wasn't this unit made up of 3357,4357,4257 & a spare UNDM from Acton Works?3257 was scrapped afer a derailment at Piccadilly Circus.

No sadly it wasn't a one off! Piccadilly Circus has several victims! Just in 1994, a train overran the stops (3539-4539 scrapped) at Harrow and derailed/collision (3249-4249 scrapped) at Piccadilly. A derailment at Piccadilly in 1996 saw 3257 scrapped also. I've often wondered if an extra train could have been made by reconverting the UNDM to an 'A' end UNDM and using spare victoria line cars. Guess that won't happen now. At least the 1972 stock will be around for a few few years. By 2014 they will be the last westinghouse braked trains on the network!

By 2014 they will be the last Westinghouse braked trains on the network! And by then they and the 73 stock (don't they have the 'Westcode' brake in addition to the EP?) will be the only trains left with PCM traction control equipment. Another era drawing to a close.

Four or five years ago you'd take in a sharp intake of breath when the '99 unit pulled in as your next pick-up! It seemed to be jinxed for defects back then for a good six months! As a result of the 'mishaps' Piccadilly Circus remains heavily restricted when it comes to reversing trains. Even at just under the 5mph limit, the A1000 and the three A9000's won't necessarily drop off on approach and going the other way - creeping along at 3mph - has left a couple of my colleagues gapped! In addition to that, the north-south is still, except in emergencies, a banned move despite the reinstatement of the south-north.
