Before the days of battery handlamps the car examiners on LT had a gas lamp which used a mixture of carbide and water, lovely bright light it gave too.Because of the volatile nature of this mixture it was the instruction that if the lamp was not going to be used for any length of time it should be emptied of both carbide and water, unfortunately someone at Hainault forgot to do this and left a lamp in the tool lockers between 58 & 59rds with carbide and water in for several days causing a large build up of flammable gas.Eventually the inevitable happened, the shunters were railing a train on 59rd and as Q8 will tell you if a train is motoring as the jumper moves along it causes a shower of sparks from the trolley wheels, this happened and KERBOOM!!!one tool locker blown open and one very lucky shunter needing a change of underwear.Life was much more fun in the old days.

Cor! They did motoring from the TROLLEY at Hainault. Just shows you how different lines had different ways of doing the same thing. I never saw that done at Upminster as I think a couple of guys got the sack for doing it. Anyway the lockers were in a separate room AFAIR.

Cor! They did motoring from the TROLLEY at Hainault. Did it on the Picc as well. How else do you get a train on juice, surely a Q8 is a bit heavy to push?

They would use a gap lead to plug into the leading motor sometimes but I THINK they did sometimes use trolleying although I never saw it. I have also known them to use an 8 car and couple it to a 2 car east end in the shed so making 10 cars. Haul it out or as far as they wanted it and uncouple it again.
With a "Q" once one pair of shoes were on juice the whole train was because of the busline.
The reason that trolleying was frowned on at Upminster was that one of the men was electrocuted whilst so doing and killed. So Vic Bruty stamped on it. Mind you what the eye don't see.........
