Knock on delays taken to the extreme . . .

So the Met had severe delays from Harrow to Uxbridge and Anersham due to the signal failure at South Ken! The anti clockwise Curcle line was running, so it can't be blamed for holding up the Met. So I'm puzzled about this one.

See current status (22.:54) is severe delays on the Bakerloo between QP & Harrow & Wealdstone because of earlier signal failure!

Met is clear of delays-there's also minor delays on the rest of the Bakerloo, again down to earlier signal failure.

Weird indeed; unless something else went at roughly the same time as South Ken??

According to tubestatus.net the Bakerloo has had a less than stellar afternoon and evening. A faulty train at Harrow & Wealdstone (minor delays 3:15pm, suspended north of Stonebridge Park 4:15pm, good service 5:30pm); Signal failure at Willesden Junction (Suspended north of Queen's Park 6:30pm, severe delays 7:00pm, Good Service 7:30pm) and signal failure at Willesden Junction (a recurrence?) (severe delays 7:46pm, suspended north of Queen's Park 8:30pm, severe delays 10pm, minor delays 11:15pm)

The South Ken signal failure impacted the Circle (suspended clockwise) and District (severe delays) at 10:30am, then at midday the clockwise circle resumed with severe delays but the H&C gained severe delays and the Met minor delays, at 12:15 the District eased to severe delays but the Met worsened to severe delays. At 2:30 the Met went from severe delays straight to a good service (hmm) while the H&C had eased to minor delays 15 minutes earlier and the District resumed a good service 15 minutes later. Minor delays on the Circle and H&C lasted until 5:30pm.

It most certainly can be blamed. The outer rail circle services were reversed at Moorgate and Aldgate, adding to the trains on the Inner Rail. There then followed a series of crew relief problems at Edgware Road which led a queue of trains stretching back to Aldgate. Westbound trains were as much as forty five minutes late arriving at Baker Street.

It sounds as if too many met trains were allowed onto the circle.

The problems with crew reliefs at Edgware Road was severely affecting the Wimbledon-Edgware Rd service to the extent that my train was delayed approaching the station for 16 minutes, then an extra 12 minutes in the platform, not good on the finishing run to Earl's Court!

Would it not be more sensible to is suspend the outer rail Circle on these occasions, and just stable the trains out of the way in Barking sidings? Or suspend the Met between Baker St and Aldgate sooner, so that less of its trains are affected?

That would have worked when the Circle was a circle, but if you suspend the outer rail Circle these days you have to suspend the inner rail as well: otherwise you will rapidly run out of trains arriving at Edgware Road to form inner rail services, and just as rapidly have a queue of inner-rail services arriving at Hammersmith with nowhere to put them. You could of course square this circle (pun not intended, but it's a good one so I kept it in) by diverting inner rail services at Edgware Road to go round again, but that starts to upset the rostering of both trains and drivers.

Suspending the Met east of Baker Street is also not as simple as it might seem, as the trains have to be put somewhere at Baker Street until it's time to take up their rostered working back into Metroland.

It has been done numerous times where during delays, one direction of the Circle runs as a true circle with the other direction suspended, so it can be done. With regard to the Met, they often put the trains into Neasden depot until they are ready for their northbound timetabled run.

yes the met is often suspended when there are problems in the city, all Aldgate services tip out Harrow then run down the fast to Wembley and away, back out right time north, as crew reliefs are all Harrow or Ricky this causes no operational problems.
