Charing Cross

Hello. Does anybody know why Charing Cross Jubilee was closed when the JLE opened, after being open for only 20 years? Would it have put too much strain on the northbound Green Park onwards?

Because it was built when the plans were for the line to continue on via Aldwych.

After much politics and various diverse happenings, it was instead routed via Waterloo and London Bridge.

The curves that would have been required to link Charing Cross up with the new route would have hit journey times hard.

What's more, Charing Cross wasn't particularly well-used and its escalators would have needed replacing. These factors pretty much killed off suggestions of keeping it open for a shuttle, a reduced service, or for emergencies.

Operating a branch to Charing Cross would significantly reduce the capacity on the branch to Stratford, and there simply isn't the demand for a two branches at the moment, given that services towards Stratford are (AIUI) pretty full most of the time!

Even at 2:30 last Sunday morning it was standing room only as far as Canada Water!

The platforms remain operational as an emergency reversing point and for filming purposes.

And the 1938 stock tour of the Jubilee Line visited the closed station not so long ago.
