Hi everyone,
Apologies if this has been covered before, but I travelled on the JLE today and noticed (as I have done before) how incredibly loud it was. It made my ears block on multiple occasions. So my question is quite simple really: Why is the JLE so loud? Is it the way the tunnels are made? Is it something to do with the rails? Or is it something else? It's certainly the loudest part of the Underground that I have noticed.

It's certainly the loudest part of the Underground that I have noticed. I suspect it may well be at least partly because it is the fastest tunnel running on LU. Trains routinely achieve 60 mph, which is about the only tunnel area where this happens. (The only other tunnel sections I can think of off-hand are a couple of bits of the Picc, in particular T123 to T5 westbound. And to the best of my memory that is unofficial and thus doesn't always happen).

The rail and wheel profiles have a lot to do with the sound; for a while the BART transbay tubes were just awful, like can't-read-your-newspaper awful, but with recent grindings they got a lot quieter. (Still too loud in my opinion.)

It made my ears block on multiple occasions. That sounds more like something caused by pressure changes than sound levels. There's a section of the Victoria line northbound, past KX that suffers from extremely high noise levels. (I'm not sure if there is the same effect coming back, but that might be because I register it on the way out and don't pay any attention on the way back.)

The Victoria, just north of King's cross is also a high speed running tunnel section, and you can certainly feel it when travelling along that route.
