Yesterday evening (at around 11:30pm) I got on an Upminster train at Moorgate.
I had to look twice at the departure board.
On the train, the automatic announcements weren't announcing anything until we arrived at Aldgate East when it resumed 'This is a district line train to Upminster'.
I wondered where the train had originated from and if it is common for Upminster trains to run via Liverpool Street - I had never seen this happen before.

Sounds like you were on train 274. Some H&C trains at the start / end of the day run from / to Upminster depot for maintenance purposes.
In the past, some C stock trains also did this, but not in passenger service.
The train is operated by a H&C driver up to Barking from where a District line driver takes over.

Around a decade ago, or maybe slightly longer, I have alighted from a C Stock at Elm Park that became destined for Upminster one late afternoon/early evening after work....  |

There's also a number of trips that run (in service) off the C&H to and from Ealing Common depot at the extremes of service. All part of the new stabling arrangements for the S7s to cycle them via a major depot, and not a million miles different to how C stock off the District would cycle via their major depot at Hammersmith.

There are H&C trains that enter service from Upminster too. There's one about 06:20-ish at Dagenham East that is normally described as a Aldgate East but sometimes as a Hammersmith. At Barking we get advised that it's a Hammersmith and City Line train.
I tend to let it go and catch the Richmond train that is normally following it.
