I gather from a post I've just seen on Facebook that Rockhill Trolley Museum in America has taken delivery of two cars of D stock. Here is an image taken from that post....

This is part of a joint partnership between VivaRail and a consortium of US Railroad Development Corporation looking into the viability of utilising the numerous lightly used freight lines that pass through populated areas to support passenger services. The project is called Pop Up Metro. Video: Presentation slides: rrdc.com/presentation_NJ_TransAction_2020_10_PUM.pdfPhoto from RRDC:

This is going to be a very interesting venture to follow. The US must have plenty of subway cars due to become surplus (or have they?) and if that is the case, then what's to stop them building their own version? Unless Vivarail has patented technology, in which case there may be a useful licensing deal to be done.

I recall reading about interest in what Vivarail are doing from within the USA. Maybe one day in the future I'll go and visit this museum to see the train in action, however not until things have settled down and international travel does not come with a risk of an expensive stay at a quarantine hotel when arriving back in the UK.

Unless Vivarail has patented technology, in which case there may be a useful licensing deal to be done. Absolutely nothing. But you could say that about any number of technologies or developments that have taken place in one country and are used in others. The fact that there's nothing to stop someone doing something doesn't mean they are necessarily going to do it. And, at the moment, Vivarail have a tried and tested product, and others don't. And it would take them a while to catch up. In the end, it will depend on the perceived size of the market.

First time I've noticed the blocked-off centre cab window; the colour scheme makes it very obvious! Is that the same on all the conversions, and what's behind it?

Not required it would appear. Less chance of draughts in the cab. Checking photos all the trains so far have had the door removed. The former window area is painted black so not so obvious.

Some strengthening of the body has been installed where the centre door used to be to help withstand the impact should a train hit a lorry on a level crossing.

Just as well. It seems to be common for 'semis' to get stuck or stopped for random reasons on US 'grade crossings'. Any number of destruction videos on the internet. The big US locos always win of course. Not sure how a strengthened D stock would fare, but no doubt it's been made to meet relevant regulations.

I wonder what happened to 7056? I think it’s still there?
