Has anyone noticed how dusty the exterior surfaces on Victoria Line trains have become over the last few months, and what has caused this mucky state of affairs? The trains don’t actually go sloshing through mud but several look as though they might.

There use to be two train washes at Northumberland Park depot on 51 and 52 roads, nearly every train when heading to the depot use to get a wash on the way in. Now days there is only the one on 60 road, so a train would only get a wash when doing a staff train, and if that's now knackered, nothing is getting washed. Anyone got a bucket and sponge?

Anyone got a bucket and sponge? Sounds a bit much for the scouts and Bob-a-job.

I often pass the wash when driving past between Tottenham Hale and Meridian Water - looks like the wash is being re-built? As usual it's taking a very long time.
They may get a bit of a wash tonight from the rain when they get stabled - a bit.

Bob a job week ended in 1992. Same as in any previous year... I must admit it took me a moment to get that. You are Commander Data, and I claim my £5.

A few readers seem to have missed the connection from "Anyone got a bucket and sponge?" (suggesting that random people start manually washing the trains) with the idea of B-a-J (slightly less random people manually washing cars, etc) and that washing a train is a bit more work than the Scouts would have taken on. It should also have been apparent that neither is going to happen.
And I still occasionally hear older people derisively refer to menial or simple work they don't want to do as "Bob-a-job work" ("Sweep leaves off the pavement? That's bob-a-job work, get someone else to do it.").
Back to the original, ISTR that more than one depot was set up so that trains either leaving or entering almost always passed through a washer. Sounds like this no longer true for Northumberland Park, what about other depots?

Before it was moved so trains could be washed leaving service(introduction of 92TS)trains had to shunt via north & south shunt necks to wash at Hainault Depot.

Before the extra roads were put in at Northumberland Pk there were no real exterior cleaning facilities at the depot. The odd train was cleaned on 46 or 47rds using the fire hoses but was not ideal. There was a booked stock move in the WTT Northumberland Pk to Cockfosters(reversing in Down St Sdg)on Tuesdays, return trip, not sure if was Wednesday or Thursday,Cockfosters to Northumberland Pk(reversing in Down St Sdg)for exterior cleaning. Was a nice earner for us fitters as a fitter had to ride on stock moves,we got 4 hours OT for each stock move.

Victoria Line timetables are written so that the staff train that runs through the wash road, is a different train as often as possible through the timetable. In other words:- Depot stabling road - Seven Sisters (empty), then Seven Sisters to Northumberland Park Staff Platform (Staff train), then back to Seven Sisters, then run empty to stable in the depot. Then do the same with another train. Of course at times of stabling or starting up, a Staff train could be formed at Seven Sisters by a train coming out of main service and equally a Staff train from Northumberland Park Staff platform can enter service at Seven Sisters.
