Can anyone remember when these were finally removed?
Did it happen piecemeal as units were serviced, or was it all done over a few days(or weeks)?
Or are they still there on older stock, but just don't register?

Bakerloo 1972 and Piccadilly 1973 Stock still have them on the windows. 1992 Stock were the first delivered without window transfers.
Just checked and 1973 Stock have recently lost them in favour of interior panel based ones!

D stock retained theirs to the end except at positions where they had been replaced and later spares may not have been purchased with the sign fired in. I recall there was a somewhat pointless debate about renewing them all at Refurb, until stakeholders accepted that this wasn't even remotely implied in the scope of work.

It really annoys me that the third line on train arrival displays at stations like Westminster on the district are often taken up with a slowly scrolling 'no smoking' message when one needs to assess whether to board the next train and change later or can see one to their destination in the next few minutes. If this needs to be done for some reason, why just single out smoking?

If this needs to be done for some reason, why just single out smoking? There is probably a smoking problem on the platforms which have lots of shady areas. Lots of tourists too.

Given the growing prevalence of e-cigarettes and their more or less immediate use, I would be inclined to say that the no smoking message is just as pertinent now as it was in 1987.

Yes, but it would be better if it were confined to places where it does not interfere with important navigational information.
