<<Thread moved from Central Line - goldenarrow>>Plans to build high density rabbit hutches (for humans) on empty land next to the historic GER 1903 Grade ll listed London underground Central line railway station at Barkingside The project will also make the station fully accessible & much easier to find by non-locals! At present it is somewhat 'out of the way' a short distance from main roads and bus stops and also without a clear access / walking route to the town centre. Comments on a local area discussion forum include that it is so not 'in your face' visible that some local people did not even know the station existed and were using Gants Hill as a bus / rail interchange location! This is interesting because UndergrounD stations did tend to be built in locations where they were 'highly visible' whilst steam train era stations were sometimes built on the outskirts of the towns they claimed to serve and in some cases were even as much as a mile away!!! barkingsideyard.co.uk/proposals/

Did this area used to be a goods depot pre-LU? It looks that shape! I noticed this item on the Mayoral Community Infrastructure Levy in the latest Finance Committee papers: "A block of authorities in outer east London (Redbridge, Havering, Barking and Dagenham and Bexley), have cumulative receipts of less than £10m each. This contrasts some outer north and west London authorities, for example Barnet and Hounslow have returns of more than £30m, and Brent has a return exceeding £40m." Makes it look like this is the next area for developers! Link

Its labelled "Coal Yard" on the post war OS map I've just found. I was raised about 2 miles away, rarely used Barkingside, it was easier/ quicker to stay on the bus (129) until Gants Hill, rather than a considerable walk from Barkingside High Road.

I hope not as it would be as it would be sad to see part of the history in local transport be affected.

The station building is Gread II listed, so it wont be demolished and I would be surprised if there were significant alternations. I expect that step-free access to the outer rail platform will be added, but whether that will be a second footbridge or a replacement for the existing one (which does not form part of the listing) I don't know.

I imagine step free access on the outer rail platform would require lifts, probably something similar to those at Loughton on the "Fairlop" end of the platforms.

Do you mean Debden rather than Loughton? If so, then yes I expect something similar is what will be provided if they choose the second footbridge rather than replacement footbridge option. I don't know the station anywhere near well enough to have an opinion about which end a second footbridge would be added.

Yes, you definitely don't mean Loughton. It's about the least disabled friendly station in the suburbs, and would very expensive to adapt. Lifts from Great Eastern Path?
