Happy Birthday! 160 years of the Tube
On 10 January, 160 years ago, a gas-lit wooden carriage leaves Paddington, taking Metropolitan Railway passengers towards Farringdon. This marked the arrival of the world’s first underground railway.

Who knew then that 160 years later people would still be making that same journey, be it by choice of lines to far reaches of the city on electrified track, walk-through, air-conditioned trains and part of an expansive integrated transport network.

On Tuesday 10 January 2023, Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, Deputy Mayor for Transport Seb Dance and Commissioner Andy Lord attended a special event held at Baker Street station - one of the stations along the original route.

Also attending the event were colleagues who together represented 160 years of service.

In a message to colleagues Commissioner Andy Lord said:
“This momentous anniversary is a chance for all of us to celebrate our entire organisation, our history and our future. We should all be immensely proud of everything we’ve achieved and everything we continue to do to move London forward."
“This occasion is also an opportunity to say loudly and proudly why people should use and value our incredible integrated transport network.

“Thank you for everything you do and for your contribution to our historic network.”

Good lord!

It seems only a couple. Of years back that we were celebrating 150 years of the underground.

I understand what the Roundel designer was trying to do, but I think it looks horrible. The 160th Birthday cake looks great though, also looking like a high rise.

Looks to me like three line colours above the station name panels, although the original platforms are only served by two!

I see only two colours - yellow and pink

Think the blue sign's border is confusing the issue-at the top anyway,at first glance anyway. Only when you look at the other three sides,do you realise the sign colour matches the station name's colour, especially as it's Piccadilly blue.

The frieze panels have grey trim around all the edges.

It's an optical illusion. I saw the borders to be blue until I read the above, after which I looked again more closely, and they are indeed dark grey.
The corner just above John Savident's head still looks blue, if I move my eyes to it from the lettering.

It is an optical illusion. I fancy I saw the Met colour at the top, but it must be the grey frame. Also, it is hard to make out how many colours are shown, since I can easily see a cross between the pink and yellow where they meet. That may be from staring at a 2D picture rather than the real-life view.
