For the last week, station closures have been bad. All the stations are closed below 'due to the temporary unavailability of station staff' (TfL website)
Some people have been saying this is because LU have cut 500 station staff, resulting in these closures. Other people saying staff sickness?

Some people have been saying this is because LU have cut 500 station staff, resulting in these closures. Other people saying staff sickness? The immediate cause is a combination of there being insufficient staff numbers to fully staff every station at all times without relying on overtime and RMT members refusing to work overtime as part of action short of a strike. The reason why TfL have to rely on overtime is also a combination of factors including the pandemic (which decimated TfL's income necessitating TfL accept stringent conditions from the government, put a freeze on most training and recruitment and left a legacy of increased rates of staff sickness) and staff cuts, the latter being, at least in part, a result (directly and/or indirectly) of the government cutting TfL's grant and the conditions attached to pandemic funding. These same factors are also (partly) responsible for RMT members feeling the need to take the action short of a strike.

This is all getting a little political; Chris M has given a good balanced precĂs. I suggest that those who wish to dig deeper into the root causes of the closures think carefully before posting.

In general, TfL seem to do a good job of prioritising which stations to keep open, with those closed always only a short walk from a nearby station. While a little annoying (I've definitely cursed when finding Southwark closed!) the system of sharing staff between groups of stations seems to work relatively well for network management.
