My son has alerted me to some signage he found at Paddington. Appalling standards we both thought. The Circle Line split at Edgware Road isn't show, the Elizabeth Line isn't shown, Edgware Road is spelt incorrectly, there's an apostrophe apocalypse, the interchange information for Liverpool Street and possibly Tower Hill has been cropped off, there's a lax attitude to letter case for "Lines" (or lines) and besides all of that, it's somewhat confusing what the split in the middle is all about! Can anyone spot anything else? Signs are bad

“Temple open Monday to Saturday only” “Cannon Street open Monday to Friday until 2100”
Non-Johnston lettering. Definitely poor from Network Rail.

Can anyone spot anything else? Missing the Northern Line at Embankment and using the old DLR logo at Bank and Tower Hill! Obviously this map is very old because the Circle Line is still a Circle (and isn't shown as going to Hammersmith)

"Blackfrias Pier"
If you wanted the District Line the arrow sends you the correct direction, left, but Paddington's own interchange with the District Line isn't shown on the map. The nearest interchange for the District shown on the map is the one at Edgware Road, which is somewhat useless as it would take you in completely the wrong direction. The Bayswater interchange would at least appear in the correct half of the sign, but they've left that one off!
Paddington is shown twice of course, as it should be, but the Paddington interchange with the Bakerloo Line is shown in the upper half of the diagram showing the H&C line next to the rightwards arrow. The arrow for the Padington's own Bakerloo Line interchange is sending you to the left.

Clearly very outdated:
- Shepherd's Bush is now Shepherd's Bush Market
- No Wood Lane
- Also doesn't show rail interchanges
- Odd, off-centre labels for various lines
I've always thought some of the signage at Paddington was poor but I never realised it was this bad.

possibly done by a trainee youth worker who might have been born and bread (sic) in London but whose grammatical skills are nigh-on non-existent! Oh and management who think that because their trainee can rite (sic) they have the required skills.

The split in the middle is between 'Circle Line via King's Cross' turn right, and 'Circle Line via Victoria' turn left.
Can someone date this sign by its features?

Can someone date this sign by its features? Cannon Street stretched its opening hours from 1930 to 2045 in May 1993 and again to 2100 in August 1997. It opened on Saturdays from 7 May 2005. Temple station opened on Sundays from 7 May 2005. Westminster Jubilee Line station opened in December 1999. River piers were added to the map from June 2002 So somewhere between June 2002 and May 2005

So rather than bad, are we actually suggesting this is old signage?

I think it's both old and bad.

So rather than bad, are we actually suggesting this is old signage? Both. Spelling, some missing interchanges, apostrophes, layout, typefaces... all bad. Logos, other missing interchanges, lack of circle line split, opening restrictions ... old age!

If this is an NR-produced diagram then the typeface not being New Johnston isn't an error. That's not a defence for the rest of the issues though.

I do quite like the return of the ticks, shame they're not filled in...

Wrong thread, or am I missing something?

I believe Andrew is referring to the black-outlined projections at 180° from the line at interchange stations.

Thanks Chris, yes I am. I've always called them ticks, do they have a proper name at all?

I've seen them referred to as "lozenges" but whether that's the proper name or not I don't know. I usually see the word "ticks" used for the squares used for non-interchange stations.

I thought those were the little empty or full diamonds next to station names ⬧⬨ ... from the French, losenge, meaning rhombus.

I believe Andrew is referring to the black-outlined projections at 180° from the line at interchange stations. They are known internally as flag boxes.
